Best LLM Guardrails Tools 2026: Bedrock, Model Armor, NeMo
The short answer
Use your cloud’s managed guardrail if your app runs there, NeMo Guardrails when you need custom rails in your own code, and Llama Guard when nothing may leave your servers. The best LLM guardrails tools, as of October 29, 2026:
| Tool | Type | Checks | Price (list) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Bedrock Guardrails | Managed (AWS) | Content filters, denied topics, PII, prompt attack, contextual grounding, Automated Reasoning | Content filters/denied topics $0.15 per 1,000 text units; PII $0.10; grounding $0.10; regex & word filters free | AWS apps; works on non-Bedrock models via the ApplyGuardrail API |
| Google Model Armor | Managed (Google Cloud) | Prompt injection & jailbreak, harmful content, sensitive data (via Sensitive Data Protection), malicious URLs | 2M tokens/month free standalone, then $0.10 per 1M tokens; 3B tokens included in SCC Enterprise | Model-agnostic screening; Google Cloud agents |
| Azure AI Content Safety (Prompt Shields) | Managed (Azure) | Prompt injection (direct and document), harm categories, groundedness | Free tier 5,000 text records/month; S tier per 1,000 text records | Microsoft Foundry and Azure OpenAI apps |
| NVIDIA NeMo Guardrails | Open source framework | Input, dialog, retrieval, execution and output rails | Free (v0.24.1, Sep 16, 2026) | Custom policies inside your agent or RAG code |
| Guardrails AI | Open source (Apache 2.0) | Validators for structure, PII, toxicity, competitors, etc. | Free (v0.11.0, Aug 14, 2026) | Validating and repairing structured output |
| Llama Guard 4 / LlamaFirewall (Meta PurpleLlama) | Open-weight classifiers | Safety classification of prompts and responses, prompt-injection detection | Free; you host the model | Air-gapped or fully self-hosted stacks |

How the options differ
Amazon Bedrock Guardrails is the most complete managed menu. You attach a guardrail to a Bedrock model call, or call the ApplyGuardrail API to check text for any model, including ones hosted elsewhere. You pay only for the filters you enable, so a guardrail with content filters and PII detection is $0.25 per 1,000 text units. A newer InvokeGuardrailChecks API prices content filters at $0.07 and prompt-attack checks at $0.08 per 1,000 units. Automated Reasoning checks ($0.17 per 1,000 units per policy) verify answers against formal rules, which suits regulated policies.
Google Model Armor screens prompts and responses for prompt injection, jailbreaks, harmful content, malicious URLs and sensitive data, independent of which model you call. Google counts four characters as a token, and Sensitive Data Protection inside Model Armor costs nothing extra. It also plugs into Google’s Agent Gateway, so every agent request can be screened at the network layer.
Azure AI Content Safety provides Prompt Shields for direct jailbreaks and for attacks hidden in documents, plus harm-category classifiers and groundedness detection. A text record is up to 1,000 characters. If you use Azure OpenAI in Microsoft Foundry, content filtering is already on by default; Prompt Shields adds injection detection.
NeMo Guardrails is a framework, not a single classifier: you define rails in Colang and configuration, and they call detectors (including Llama Guard, Presidio or a hosted API) at each stage of a conversation. Choose it when the policy is specific to your app — “never quote a price without calling the pricing tool” — rather than generic safety.
Guardrails AI wraps an LLM call with validators and can re-ask the model when output fails, which is useful for structured outputs that must pass schema, PII or business-rule checks.
Llama Guard 4 and LlamaFirewall from Meta’s PurpleLlama project let you run safety classification and prompt-injection detection entirely on your own hardware.
Picks by situation
- Everything on AWS: Bedrock Guardrails, prompt-attack and PII filters on input, content and grounding checks on output.
- Multi-model app on Google Cloud, or model-agnostic screening at low volume: Model Armor; the free 2 million tokens covers many prototypes.
- Microsoft Foundry: Azure Content Safety with Prompt Shields.
- Custom agent logic and policies: NeMo Guardrails calling Llama Guard.
- Nothing may leave your network: Llama Guard 4 plus Microsoft Presidio for PII.
Budget and latency
Each guardrail adds a network round trip or a classifier pass to every request, typically tens to a few hundred milliseconds. Run input checks in parallel with retrieval where you can, check streamed output in chunks rather than waiting for the full response, and enable only the filters your threat model needs — every filter is billed separately. Find the holes before launch with LLM red teaming tools, and read guardrails vs evals vs observability for where each layer fits.
