Quick Answer

Best Price Speech Recognition Software 2026: Ranked

Published:

The short answer

The best-priced speech recognition software in October 2026 depends on what you are transcribing. For dictating into any app, Wispr Flow gives the most for the money: free to start, $12 a month billed annually for unlimited use. For meetings, Otter has the most generous free plan (300 minutes a month) and costs $8.33 a month on annual billing. For developers paying per hour of audio, xAI’s Grok speech-to-text at $0.10 an hour is the cheapest major API. The cheapest option of all is already on your computer: Apple Dictation and Windows Voice Typing are free. Prices were checked on vendor pages on October 5, 2026.

The picks, explained

Wispr Flow — best value for dictation. One app works in every text box on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, learns names and jargon, and supports 100+ languages. The free plan is limited; Pro removes the cap for $15 a month, or $12 on annual billing. Teams pay $23–$33 per user for the Growth plan, which adds SSO and a signed HIPAA BAA. Our Wispr Flow explainer covers how it works.

Otter — best value for meetings. Otter joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, transcribes in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Chinese, and writes summaries with action items. Basic is free with 300 minutes a month and a 30-minute cap per conversation; Pro raises that to 1,200 minutes and 90 minutes per conversation. Students and teachers with a .edu address get Pro for $79.99 a year. Otter was running a 50% promotion on Pro in early October 2026; budget at list.

Built-in dictation — best price, full stop. macOS and iOS Dictation and Windows Voice Typing cost nothing and are good on clear speech. What they lack is the paid tools’ value: custom vocabulary, cleanup of filler words, long-form formatting and meeting capture.

APIs — best price per hour of audio. If you are building transcription into a product or processing an archive, per-hour APIs are far cheaper than per-seat apps. Grok STT lists $0.10 an hour batch; AssemblyAI’s Universal-2 is $0.15; ElevenLabs Scribe v2 and AssemblyAI Universal-3.5 Pro sit at $0.21–$0.22. Ten thousand hours of audio costs $1,000–$2,200 on these, before add-ons such as diarization. Full rankings: best speech-to-text APIs.

Dragon — premium price, narrow use. Dragon Professional v16 remains the tool for Windows users who drive their whole PC by voice, need offline recognition, or work in legal and public-sector environments with established Dragon vocabularies. Nuance’s consumer product pages now redirect to Microsoft, which has moved its clinical customers to Dragon Copilot, and there is no current Mac version. For general writing, the AI dictation apps match it for a fraction of the up-front cost.
