Rule of thumb: Google Workspace household → Gemini. Developer or ops person who wants code and work agents together → ChatGPT. Need an agent that drives your actual Windows desktop → Claude.
Gemini for Windows: what Google shipped
Google’s pitch is staying in flow: press Alt + Space over whatever you are doing, get “a quick fact-check on a document or a few catchy title ideas,” and jump back. The full window adds a side panel for Notebooks and Recents. Google itself calls the app “lightweight and quiet” and 9to5Google’s read is that it is largely the web app in a native frame — the differentiation is the shortcut and the agent.
That agent is Gemini Spark, positioned as a 24/7 personal AI agent with access to Connected Apps. Spark has been expanding through 2026 — Google Photos control for automated editing and sharing arrived September 3 — and now runs from the desktop. Creative tools are bundled: Nano Banana for images and video generation for Google AI subscribers.
Context for the launch: Google made the Gemini Daily Brief free in the US on September 8, began the mandatory Google Assistant → Gemini switch on phones on September 4, and — per multiple reports — has pushed Gemini 4 Pro to October 2026 after pre-training challenges. The Windows app is Google widening the surface while the next model finishes.

ChatGPT for Windows: the everything-desktop
OpenAI’s Windows app predates both rivals, and it uses the same Alt + Space shortcut for its companion window — install both and one loses; ChatGPT lets you change the hotkey, and Gemini’s docs should be checked for the same. Since July 9, 2026 the desktop app has combined Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex; the July 16 update added the desktop layout, Projects, unified Recents and Cloud Work synchronisation.
What that buys you on Windows, as of September 2026:
- Codex for autonomous coding on GPT-6 Astra.
- ChatGPT Work agents for documents, spreadsheets and decks, and the new Data agent (September 10) that connects Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks and others to build dashboards from chat.
- GPT-Live voice inside the app.
It is the broadest bundle; the trade-off is that the desktop app itself does not run agents on your local machine the way Cowork does — heavy work happens in OpenAI’s cloud.
Claude Desktop for Windows: the most autonomous
Anthropic’s Windows app arrived February 10, 2026 and its headline feature is Cowork: an autonomous background agent that works in a sandboxed virtual machine with its own environment while you do something else. Three additions since matter for Windows users:
- Computer use in Cowork — when there is no connector or tool for what you asked, Claude navigates your screen directly, clicking, typing and opening apps.
- Remote sessions (beta from September 1, 2026) — Cowork keeps running when the laptop sleeps.
- Claude Code in the same app for terminal-grade coding, alongside Chat.
Cowork needs a paid plan (Pro and up). It is the only one of the three whose desktop app is the product rather than a wrapper around the web.
