Quick Answer

OpenAI Agent Builder Alternatives Before the Nov 30 Shutdown

Published:

The short answer

OpenAI Agent Builder is scheduled to shut down on November 30, 2026. Export every workflow now. Then pick the replacement by who maintains the agent:

  1. Developers, staying on OpenAI: OpenAI Agents SDK — the official migration path, free and open source.
  2. Business users who built no-code agents: ChatGPT Workspace Agents (Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace).
  3. Ops teams who liked the visual canvas: n8n — visual workflows with agent, MCP and AI nodes, cloud or self-hosted.
  4. Microsoft 365 organisations: Microsoft Copilot Studio.
  5. Teams that want hosted deployment plus tracing: LangSmith (LangGraph-based agents).

What is shutting down, and when

From OpenAI’s deprecations page:

  • June 3, 2026: Agent Builder, the Evals platform and reusable prompt objects deprecated.
  • October 31, 2026: existing evals became read-only.
  • November 30, 2026: Agent Builder, the Evals dashboard and API, and the v1/prompts API are scheduled to shut down.
  • ChatKit remains available — but a ChatKit UI backed by a hosted Agent Builder workflow loses that backend.

Prompt objects referenced as prompt: { id: "pmpt_…" } in Responses API calls must move into your own code. Evals need a new home too — see OpenAI Evals alternatives.

1. OpenAI Agents SDK — the default for developers

In Agent Builder, select Code → Agents SDK → TypeScript or Python and copy the export. Install the matching Agents SDK, configure tools and authentication, and test representative inputs. OpenAI’s guide is explicit that the export does not convert the workflow graph or guarantee unchanged behaviour, so treat it as a starting point and re-check control flow, triggers, tools and permissions. You keep the same models and pay only API usage.

Choose it if the agent is part of a product you ship.

2. ChatGPT Workspace Agents — for business teams

If your Agent Builder workflows were internal helpers, create a workspace agent in ChatGPT and paste the exported code with the prompt OpenAI suggests (“Please help me convert this workflow into an agent”). You need a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace with permission to create agents. Connected apps, authentication and publishing are reviewed separately. OpenAI warns that workflows with strong determinism may not migrate faithfully — those belong in the SDK.

Choose it if non-developers own the agent and it lives inside ChatGPT anyway.

3. n8n — the visual canvas replacement

n8n keeps the drag-and-drop model, with every integration, unlimited users and workflows, and agent, MCP and AI nodes on every plan. Pricing counts complete workflow executions regardless of steps: Starter €20/month (2,500 executions), Pro €50/month (10,000), Business €667/month (40,000, self-hosted, SSO, Git version control), all billed annually; the Community Edition is free to self-host. It is model-agnostic, so you can keep OpenAI or switch.

Choose it if the workflow was mostly integrations with a model step in the middle.

4. Microsoft Copilot Studio — for Microsoft 365 shops

Copilot Studio is sold as a tenant-wide licence with Copilot Credit packs of 25,000 credits at $200 per pack per month, a pay-as-you-go meter, or prepaid commit units. Each completed agent action or response consumes a varying number of credits. Pick it when agents must live in Teams and Microsoft 365 and IT already governs that estate.

5. LangSmith — hosted deployment plus tracing

LangSmith’s Plus plan ($39 per seat per month, 10,000 base traces) includes Deployment for running agents, alongside tracing and evaluation; Developer is free with 5,000 traces. Enterprise adds self-hosted and hybrid options. Usage is billed in LangChain Standard Units at $1.00 each.

Choose it if you want a framework-plus-hosting combination and will rebuild the agent as a LangGraph graph. Compare frameworks in how to choose an AI agent framework.

Migration checklist

  1. Export every workflow to Agents SDK code before November 30, 2026.
  2. Inline any pmpt_ prompt objects into code or a prompt management tool.
  3. Re-point ChatKit front ends at a backend you host.
  4. Recreate evals elsewhere and run them against the migrated agent before switching traffic.
