Akamai vs Cloudflare: AI Bot Scraping and Brand Protection
The short answer
Cloudflare for control over AI crawlers at any size; Akamai for persistent, evasive scraping at enterprise scale. The two overlap less than their marketing suggests. As of November 5, 2026:
- AI crawlers (training, search, agents): Cloudflare. AI Crawl Control works on every plan, sorts AI traffic by what it does, and can block, allow or charge each crawler.
- Evasive scrapers stealing prices, inventory or articles: Akamai Content Protector, with machine-learning detections tuned per site, risk classification and tarpits.
- Phishing sites, fake stores, brand impersonation: both. Akamai Brand Protector includes takedown workflows; Cloudflare Brand Protection monitors new domains and logo use.
- Getting paid by AI companies: Cloudflare pay per crawl (closed beta) or Akamai with TollBit or Skyfire.
The comparison
| Job | Cloudflare | Akamai |
|---|---|---|
| See which AI bots hit you | AI Crawl Control dashboard, all plans | Bot Manager reporting and known-bot directory |
| Classify AI traffic | By behaviour: Search, Agent, Training | Verified vs unverified bots, bot score per request |
| Enforce robots.txt | Tracks which crawlers violate it, turns violations into rules | Through Bot Manager policies |
| Stop evasive scrapers | Bot Fight Mode (Free); Enterprise Bot Management: bot score, JA3/JA4, detection IDs | Content Protector: ML detections, behaviour and protocol fingerprinting, headless-browser detection, tarpits |
| Charge AI crawlers | Pay per crawl: HTTP 402 with price, Cloudflare is Merchant of Record (closed beta) | TollBit and Skyfire integrations (since Sept 17, 2025) |
| Brand impersonation | Brand Protection: domain search, logo matching | Brand Protector: phishing sites, fake stores, integrated takedown |
| Price | AI Crawl Control on every plan; Bot Management by quote | Quote only |

AI crawlers: Cloudflare is ahead
Cloudflare treats AI bots as a separate problem from malicious bots. Its docs classify every AI bot by behaviour: Search (indexing to answer later), Agent (acting in real time for a person, such as chat fetchers and browser agents) and Training (crawling to train or fine-tune a model). You can allow search and agents, which send readers, and block training, which does not.
On the Free plan you get Block AI bots, AI Labyrinth and a managed robots.txt that prepends AI directives and Cloudflare’s Content Signals policy when Bot Preference Sync is on. Cloudflare’s own docs make the key point: robots.txt compliance is voluntary, so enforcement happens in AI Crawl Control’s per-crawler block rules. AI Crawl Control also shows which crawlers ignore your robots.txt.
Akamai handles AI bots inside Bot Manager: known bots that identify themselves in the user-agent are managed as “good” bots, the rest go through detection. Akamai’s engineering blog (November 20, 2025) argues bot management must move to intent and identity, through Web Bot Auth, Know Your Agent and Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol.
Scraping and content abuse: Akamai’s strength
Content Protector is Akamai’s product for the scraper that keeps coming back: competitors scraping prices, scalpers watching inventory, sites reposting your articles. It works in four stages: machine-learning detection tailored to your site, behaviour analysis that separates people from sophisticated bots, classification into low, medium and high risk, and a response chosen per class, including tarpits that slow connections instead of blocking (which tells the bot nothing). It also runs protocol fingerprinting and JavaScript checks that catch headless browsers in stealth mode.
Cloudflare’s answer is Enterprise Bot Management: bot score, JA3/JA4 fingerprints, bot tags and detection IDs, so you write WAF rules on precise signals. It is capable; the difference is that Akamai sells a dedicated anti-scraping product with per-customer tuning, which matters in retail, travel and ticketing.
Brand security
Akamai Brand Protector detects phishing sites, fake stores and impersonation using traffic Akamai sees across its platform plus third-party feeds, ranks findings by threat score, and lets you request takedowns from the detection screen. Cloudflare Brand Protection, in Security Center, monitors newly registered domains for typosquatting, service concatenation (brand-service.com) and homoglyphs, and adds logo search for sites using your logo. Pick Akamai if you need a managed takedown workflow; pick Cloudflare if you want monitoring alongside the rest of your Cloudflare setup.
Which one to pick
- Publisher, SaaS docs site or blog that wants AI search but not AI training: Cloudflare, Free or Pro plan, AI Crawl Control. Pair it with the new shared training opt-out in how to opt out of AI training in robots.txt.
- Large retailer, airline or ticketing site with scraping that survives basic bot rules: Akamai Bot Manager plus Content Protector.
- Publisher that wants AI companies to pay: Cloudflare pay per crawl if you can join the beta; Akamai plus TollBit if you are already an Akamai customer.
- Already on one CDN: stay. Both products work at the edge, and moving CDN just for bot management is rarely worth it.
