Akamai vs Cloudflare for AI Chatbot Deployment (2026)
The short answer
Pick Cloudflare if you are building and shipping the chatbot yourself. Pick Akamai if you are an Akamai enterprise customer who wants open-weight models served on reserved capacity under contracts you already have. Both can protect a chatbot hosted anywhere else, so the security layer does not have to come from the same vendor as the model. Prices are as published on October 18, 2026.
| Cloudflare | Akamai | |
|---|---|---|
| Model hosting | Workers AI: 50+ models, serverless, OpenAI-compatible, inference in 200+ cities | Akamai Inference: managed open-weight models (Llama, Qwen, DeepSeek), OpenAI-compatible API |
| Deployment types | Serverless only (plus AI Gateway to route to OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini) | Serverless Inference (beta, request access) and Dedicated Inference on reserved GPUs (limited availability) |
| Price | $0.011 per 1,000 Neurons; 10,000 Neurons/day free; Workers Paid from $5/month | Serverless: pay per million tokens (by quote/beta); GPUs billed hourly (RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell, RTX 4000 Ada) |
| Retrieval (RAG) | AI Search: managed ingestion, chunking, embeddings, hybrid search | Build it on Akamai Cloud (compute, Kubernetes, storage) |
| Agent runtime | Agents SDK on Durable Objects (state, scheduling, WebSockets) | Your own containers on Akamai Cloud / Kubernetes |
| LLM firewall | AI Security for Apps (GA; discovery free, protection on Enterprise) | Firewall for AI (prompt injection, jailbreaks, exfiltration, toxic output) |
| Data retention | Configurable logging via AI Gateway | Zero data retention for prompts and responses |
| Best for | Startups, product teams, self-serve | Enterprises already on Akamai security/CDN |
Cloudflare: the fastest path from prototype to production
Cloudflare’s chatbot stack is self-serve and priced in public:
- Workers AI runs the model. On the October 15, 2026 price list,
@cf/openai/gpt-oss-120bcosts $0.35 input / $0.75 output per million tokens,@cf/google/gemma-4-26b-a4b-itcosts $0.10 / $0.30, and@cf/zai-org/glm-5.3costs $1.40 input / $4.40 output (cached input $0.26). Some frontier open models (GLM-5.3, Kimi K2.6, DeepSeek V4) need a paid billing method. - AI Search is managed RAG over your documents or website. Billing starts November 1, 2026; every account gets 5 million ingestion tokens, 10 GB-month of storage and 1,000 semantic queries a month, then $0.75 per million ingestion tokens and $0.75 per 1,000 semantic queries.
- AI Gateway sits in front of any provider for caching, rate limits, spend limits and logs, so you can mix Workers AI with Claude or GPT for harder questions.
- Agents SDK gives each conversation a stateful agent with its own SQLite store — useful when the “chatbot” needs to remember a customer, schedule a follow-up or hand off to a human.
For customer experience, the advantage is latency and simplicity: the model, retrieval and your front end run on the same network, close to the user, with one bill.
Akamai: enterprise inference and security under existing contracts
Akamai’s offer is aimed at organisations that already trust it with delivery and security:
- Akamai Inference is a fully managed service with an OpenAI-compatible API — “existing OpenAI code works by changing the base URL and API key” — plus zero data retention, API key management and audit logging (limited availability).
- Dedicated Inference gives you a private endpoint on GPUs reserved for you, in the region and GPU configuration you choose. That suits steady, high-volume chatbot traffic with predictable latency.
- Akamai Cloud GPUs (RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell in 1-, 2-, 4- and 8-card plans) bill hourly if you would rather self-host the model; new customers are routed to Akamai’s AI team for account review.
- Firewall for AI protects chatbots, copilots and virtual assistants from prompt injection, jailbreaks and remote code execution, and filters harmful output.
The trade-off: Serverless Inference is still a beta you sign up for, and pricing is not published, so a small team cannot just start building today the way it can on Cloudflare.
Picks by situation
- A startup or product team shipping a support chatbot in weeks, not quarters: Cloudflare (Workers AI + AI Search + AI Gateway).
- A bank, retailer or media company already on Akamai with strict data-retention rules: Akamai Inference with Dedicated endpoints and Firewall for AI.
- Chatbot already running on OpenAI, Anthropic or Bedrock; you only need protection: either firewall in front of it — Cloudflare if your DNS is on Cloudflare, Akamai if your traffic already flows through Akamai.
- High, steady volume on one open-weight model: compare Akamai Dedicated Inference with dedicated endpoints elsewhere; see leading serverless inference providers and best inference providers for scalable side projects.
