Best AI Payment Processors for Digital Goods (2026 Guide)
The short answer
If you sell an AI product to consumers or small businesses worldwide, use a merchant of record (MoR) so someone else files the sales tax. As of November 6, 2026:
- Stripe Managed Payments — best default if you already use Stripe.
- Polar — best for developers billing per token or per call.
- Paddle — best for B2B SaaS that wants an established MoR.
- Lemon Squeezy — best for simple digital downloads and licence keys.
- Plain Stripe — lowest fees, but tax compliance is your job.
This page is about selling digital goods (an AI app, API credits, prompts, models, templates). If your AI agent is the one buying, see the hub page best AI agent payment solutions.

Fees from each vendor’s pricing page or docs on November 6, 2026. International cards, currency conversion, payouts and disputes cost extra on all of them: Polar, for example, adds 1.5% for international cards and $15 per dispute.
1. Stripe Managed Payments — the default for Stripe users
Managed Payments is Stripe’s own merchant-of-record service for SaaS, software, digital content and downloads. Stripe calculates, collects, files and remits sales tax, VAT and GST in more than 80 countries, runs fraud prevention, handles disputes, and its Link service gives customers receipts and transaction-level support. It works with Stripe Checkout and Payment Links, and subscriptions run through Stripe Billing. The price is 3.5% per successful transaction on top of standard Stripe payment fees. Two limits: it does not support platforms (Stripe Connect), and customers see Link as the seller.
Pick it if your product already runs on Stripe and you want tax off your plate without migrating.
2. Polar — best for usage-based AI billing
Polar is a merchant of record aimed at developers, with every rate published. Its Usage Based Billing ingests events from your app (Polar’s own first example is “a customer consumed AI LLM tokens”), aggregates them into meters and charges metered prices, which is exactly how most AI products want to bill. The free Starter plan is 5% + 50¢; paid plans swap part of the percentage for a monthly fee, and Polar states the break-even points: about $1,379 a month in sales for Pro, $5,634 for Growth and $19,048 for Scale. Organisations created before May 27, 2026 keep an Early Member rate of 4% + 40¢ (+0.5% on subscriptions).
Pick it if you charge per token, per image or per API call and want tax handled.
3. Paddle — the established B2B choice
Paddle charges 5% + 50¢ per checkout transaction with no monthly fees, and that covers payments, checkout, subscription billing, global tax compliance, fraud protection, chargebacks and buyer support. It also sends tax-compliant invoices internationally, which B2B buyers expect, and offers custom pricing for high-volume, low-value transactions. It has no event-based token metering like Polar’s, so usage pricing usually becomes credit packs or tiers.
Pick it if you sell AI software to businesses and want a long-standing MoR with invoicing.
4. Lemon Squeezy — simplest for downloads
Lemon Squeezy (owned by Stripe since 2024) consolidates its fees into 5% + 50¢ per transaction, with small additional fees in edge cases. It is strongest at what it was built for: one-off digital downloads with signed, throttled links, licence keys issued and revoked automatically, coupons, bundles, affiliates and a hosted storefront. For a new subscription AI product, Stripe now steers digital sellers toward Managed Payments, so compare the two before you start.
Pick it if you sell a downloadable model, prompt pack, plugin or desktop app with licence keys.
5. Plain Stripe — cheapest, if you handle tax
Without an MoR you are the seller. Fees are lower (2.9% + 30¢ for US cards; outside the US the rates differ, for example 2.5% + €0.25 for UK cards from an Estonian account, plus 2% when currency conversion is needed), and Stripe Billing meters usage. But you must register for and file sales tax and VAT where you have obligations; Stripe Tax calculates it for an extra fee.
Pick it if you mainly sell to businesses in one country or already have tax registrations.
What it costs on a $30 sale
| Option | Approximate fee | What you still do yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Paddle / Lemon Squeezy / Polar Starter | $2.00 | Nothing on tax |
| Polar Scale (3.4% + 30¢, $400/mo) | $1.32 + share of $400 | Nothing on tax |
| Stripe Managed Payments | $1.05 + Stripe payment fee (~$1.17 US) | Nothing on tax |
| Plain Stripe (US card) | $1.17 + Stripe Tax if used | Register, file and remit tax |
Before international-card and currency surcharges. Run the numbers at your real average order value: the fixed 30–50¢ dominates on small purchases like $5 credit top-ups, so sell credits in larger packs.
