Quick Answer

Best Tools for Running Multiple AI Coding Agents (2026)

Published:

The short answer

For most developers in October 2026, the best way to run several AI coding agents at once is Conductor on a Mac or Cursor 3’s Agents Window in an IDE, with every agent in its own git worktree. Move to Codex cloud environments or Cursor cloud agents when tasks outgrow your laptop, and use Claude Code agent teams only when agents genuinely need to talk to each other.

1. Conductor — best overall

Conductor turns “run five Claude Code sessions” from tmux juggling into a dashboard: each task gets its own worktree, you watch status and diffs per agent, and you merge the ones that worked. The local app is free and uses your own Claude or OpenAI subscriptions and keys. Pro ($50 a month) adds Conductor Cloud workspaces, multiplayer, an API and a mobile app; Teams is $60 per user per month and currently invite-only. The limit: it is a macOS app.

2. Cursor 3 Agents Window — best inside an IDE

Cursor 3’s interface lets you “run many agents in parallel across repos and environments: locally, in worktrees, in the cloud, and on remote SSH.” Each agent sits in its own tab with its own model, so comparing two models on the same task is trivial. Cloud agents are included from the $20 Pro plan; Cursor recommends Pro+ for daily agent users and Ultra for power users. Choose it if your team already lives in Cursor; choose Conductor if you want Claude Code or Codex themselves rather than Cursor’s agent.

3. Codex cloud environments — best for long, unattended tasks

At DevDay on September 29, 2026, OpenAI relaunched Codex cloud environments: you configure a repository, dependencies and scripts once, and every task launched from that environment gets its own virtual machine and keeps running while your computer is off. Environments can be shared across a ChatGPT workspace. Access comes with ChatGPT Plus and Pro and with Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces; Plus runs on the smallest VMs.

4. Claude Code agent teams — best when agents must coordinate

Agent teams make one Claude Code session the lead and spawn teammates that share a task list and message each other directly. Anthropic’s docs say they suit research and review, separate new modules, debugging with competing hypotheses and cross-layer changes — and that they “use significantly more tokens than a single session.” They are experimental and off by default (CLAUDE_CODE_EXPERIMENTAL_AGENT_TEAMS=1), with known limits on resumption and shutdown. For independent tasks, plain parallel sessions in worktrees are cheaper and simpler.

5. Claude Squad — best free terminal option

Claude Squad (cs) is an open-source terminal app that runs Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or Aider in separate isolated workspaces, lets tasks finish in the background and shows changes for review before you push. It is AGPL-3.0 and installs with Homebrew. Choose it if you want the Conductor workflow on Linux or entirely in a terminal.

How to choose

  1. Independent tasks (bug fixes, small features): Conductor or Claude Squad, one worktree per task.
  2. Team on Cursor already: Cursor 3 Agents Window, cloud agents for long jobs.
  3. Tasks that take hours: Codex cloud environments or Cursor cloud agents.
  4. One big change that spans layers: Claude Code agent teams, with a lead that owns the merge.

Whatever you pick, the bottleneck becomes review, not generation. Three to five agents is a realistic ceiling for one person who reads every diff.
