Quick Answer

Best Web Search APIs for AI Agents 2026: 5 Compared

Published:

The short answer

Pick the search API by what your agent does after the search. For a general agent in LangChain, LangGraph or a custom loop, Tavily is the least work: search and extraction in one API. For research agents that need semantic retrieval and clean page text, Exa. For an independent web index at high query rates, Brave Search API. For the lowest price per request at volume, Perplexity Search API with Fast Search. For agents that must read whole pages or crawl a site, Firecrawl. All prices below are list USD, read from the vendors’ pricing pages on October 15, 2026.

The comparison

APIPrice per 1,000 searchesFree allowancePage contentBest for
Tavily$8 pay-as-you-go (1 credit basic, 2 advanced); $5–$7.50 on monthly plans1,000 credits/month, no cardExtract endpoint: 5 URLs per credit (basic)General agents, fastest integration
Exa$4 Instant · $7 Fast/Auto · $12–$15 Deep (10 results included)$10 credit/month (≈2,500 Instant)/contents $1 per 1,000 pages per content typeResearch agents, semantic search
Brave Search API$5 (Search plan, 50 queries/s)$5 credit/month (≈1,000 requests)Up to 5 extra snippets, LLM Context endpointIndependent index, high throughput
Perplexity Search API$5 standard · $1 Fast Search; up to 5 queries per request—Ranked results and snippetsLowest cost at volume
Firecrawl2 credits per 10 results: ≈$7.60 on Hobby, ≈$1.66 on Standard1,000 credits/month, no cardScrape/crawl/map 1 credit per pageSearch plus full-page scraping

Firecrawl’s per-search figure assumes all credits go to search: Hobby is $19 a month for 5,000 credits (2,500 searches); Standard is $83 a month billed annually for 100,000 credits.

Which one for which job

Tavily — the default for agent frameworks. Tavily prices in credits: a basic search costs 1 credit, an advanced search 2, and Extract bills 1 credit per 5 successful URLs at basic depth (failed extractions are free). Plans run from Project ($30 for 4,000 credits) to Growth ($500 for 100,000 credits, $0.005 per credit); pay-as-you-go is $0.008 per credit. Credits reset on the first of each month and requests stop when they run out unless pay-as-you-go is enabled — set that before production.

Exa — semantic search with clean text. Exa is pay-as-you-go with no subscription: /search costs $4 per 1,000 requests in instant mode and $7 in fast or auto, each including up to 10 results, with $1 per 1,000 for each extra result. Deep Search (deep-lite and deep at $12, deep-reasoning at $15 per 1,000) runs multi-step research with structured outputs. Its async Agent API costs $0.012 to $1.00 per run at fixed effort. Exa also hosts an MCP server, so Claude Code or Cursor can call it without code.

Brave Search API — your own index, not a reseller. Brave runs an independent index of 40+ billion pages updated by 100+ million pages a day. The Search plan is $5 per 1,000 requests at 50 queries per second; the Answers plan is $4 per 1,000 requests plus $5 per million input and output tokens at 2 queries per second. Goggles let you re-rank or drop domains. Pick it when you want a non-Google, non-Bing source or need high request rates.

Perplexity Search API — cheapest per call. Perplexity bills per successful POST /search request, not per query: one request can carry an array of up to five queries. Standard search is $5 per 1,000 requests; Fast Search (search_type: "fast") is $1 per 1,000 with lower latency. Rate-limited and failed requests are not billed; a successful empty response is.

Firecrawl — when the agent must read the page. Firecrawl is a scraping platform with search attached. Scrape, crawl and map cost 1 credit per page; JSON or question formats add 4 credits per page. A page that returns 403 or 404 still costs 1 credit. Choose it for agents that read documentation sites, monitor pages or turn search hits into Markdown for RAG.

How to choose in four questions

  1. Do you need page text, not snippets? Yes: Exa (contents) or Firecrawl (scrape). Snippets are enough: Brave or Perplexity.
  2. More than 1 million searches a month? Price Perplexity Fast and Brave first; negotiate enterprise rates with the others.
  3. Research-style questions with no obvious keywords? Exa’s semantic search and Deep Search.
  4. Least integration work? Tavily, which most agent frameworks already ship a tool for.

Budget the model tokens too: an agent that pastes ten full pages into context can spend more on input tokens than on the search itself — see current API prices. For browser-driven research rather than an API, see best AI browser automation tools.
