Can You Pick Claude as iPhone AI in iOS 27? June 2026
Day before WWDC 2026. One of the most interesting iOS 27 leaks is that Apple is opening Siri’s “smart handoff” slot — currently exclusive to ChatGPT — to a three-way picker including Claude (Anthropic) and Gemini (Google). Here’s everything we know.

What’s actually changing
In iOS 18 and iOS 26, when you ask Siri a question Apple’s models can’t answer, Siri offers to send it to ChatGPT. That’s been the only third-party option since the iPhone 16 launch.
In iOS 27, expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2026 on June 8:
- The handoff destination becomes user-configurable
- Reported options: ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google)
- Likely accessible in Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → Extensions
- May allow per-task choice (e.g., “Claude for writing, ChatGPT for general”)
This is separate from the Siri infrastructure itself, which will reportedly run on a custom Gemini variant Apple licensed for ~$1B/year. The picker controls the optional handoff layer, not the underlying Siri.
Why each model might be your pick
Pick Claude (Anthropic) if you…
- Write a lot — emails, docs, essays, code
- Want the strongest reasoning on long, complex prompts
- Care about safety / hallucination resistance for research
- Already pay for Claude Pro ($20/month)
- Trust Anthropic’s “Constitutional AI” approach over OpenAI’s
Best for: Writers, researchers, developers, knowledge workers.
Pick ChatGPT (OpenAI) if you…
- Already use ChatGPT daily — familiar UX
- Want best general-purpose answers across most domains
- Use ChatGPT memory (Dreaming V3) and want it to carry over
- Want the strongest agentic features (Operator, file analysis, voice)
- Already pay for ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) or Pro
Best for: General users, students, casual creators.
Pick Gemini (Google) if you…
- Live inside Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Calendar)
- Want the best multimodal (image + video) understanding
- Use Google Search heavily — Gemini integrates with live web results
- Want the longest context window for very long documents
- Already pay for Google One AI Premium ($19.99/month)
Best for: Google-ecosystem users, marketers, researchers analyzing long PDFs.
The privacy model (expected)
Apple’s existing ChatGPT integration sets a strong precedent:
- No Apple ID shared with the provider
- No request storage without explicit account linking
- Visible prompt — Siri shows you the question before sending
- Opt-in per request by default, configurable to “always allow”
All three providers will likely follow the same model in iOS 27. Anthropic and Google have stronger enterprise privacy track records than OpenAI on paper, but Apple’s privacy wrapper means the differences are smaller than they look.
What this means for Anthropic
If Claude becomes a default iPhone option, this is Anthropic’s first mass-consumer distribution event. Today:
- Anthropic has ~5–10% of consumer AI market share
- Claude is best known to developers, technical users, and enterprises
- Almost no iPhone users have ever opened the Claude app
iOS 27 changes that overnight. With ~1.4 billion active iPhones, even 5% picking Claude means 70 million new active Claude users. This is the biggest distribution win Anthropic has had since founding.
It also gives the company:
- Brand parity with OpenAI in the consumer mind
- Revenue (heavy users will upgrade to Claude Pro)
- Training data (if users opt in to share)
- Product feedback at consumer scale
This is partly why Anthropic filed for an IPO at a $965B valuation on June 1.
What this means for OpenAI
OpenAI loses exclusivity but probably keeps most usage:
- Most iPhone users have heard of ChatGPT, not Claude
- The current default will probably stay ChatGPT (path of least resistance)
- ChatGPT’s Dreaming V3 memory makes it stickier
- Voice quality and multimodal still ahead of Claude
But the moat is thinner.
What to do tomorrow (June 8)
When the WWDC 2026 keynote happens:
- Watch the Siri Extensions demo — confirm the picker exists
- Note the default — is ChatGPT still the default, or does Apple let you pick at first setup?
- Watch for Anthropic / Google logos on stage — and which one Apple demos first
- Check EU rollout — Apple Intelligence has been EU-limited; will the picker ship there?
- Check minimum chip — iPhone 15 Pro? iPhone 16? Older?
Bottom line
You will likely be able to pick Claude as your iPhone AI in iOS 27, alongside ChatGPT and Gemini, when iOS 27 launches in September. Watch the WWDC 2026 keynote on Monday June 8 for the official confirmation, UX details, and rollout schedule.
For most users, the choice will come down to: stick with ChatGPT if you already use it, switch to Claude if you write a lot, or pick Gemini if you live in Google Workspace. The three-way pick is great for AI competition — and it’s the biggest consumer distribution shift in Anthropic’s history.
