What OpenAI shipped on September 18

Since ChatGPT Atlas shut down on August 9, 2026 (see what to use instead of Atlas), OpenAI has offered two browser routes: a browser built into the ChatGPT desktop app and a Chrome extension. The built-in browser’s weakness was that it was a stripped-down environment — no password manager, no developer tools, none of the extensions people actually run their day through.

On September 18, 2026 OpenAI turned on Chrome extension support in that browser. You can install and pin extensions from the Chrome Web Store, and they persist alongside the browser’s own cookies, downloads and saved passwords. 1Password was the example OpenAI used; the point is that the in-app browser can now be a primary work browser rather than a sandbox you visit.

Two design choices define it:

  1. Separate state. OpenAI’s documentation says the built-in browser maintains its own state and does not inherit your Chrome profile, cookies, signed-in sessions or extensions. Cookies created inside it do persist.
  2. The agent stays outside the extensions. James Sun stated that the agent “cannot interact with any shadow DOM or extensions,” so it cannot use an extension to extract information or escalate privileges. A human can use 1Password to sign in; the agent cannot open 1Password. That is OpenAI’s description of the boundary, not an independent audit.

Around the agent itself, ChatGPT asks for approval before using a new website unless the host is already allowed or broader permissions were granted, treats web content as untrusted, and tells users to type credentials into the browser rather than into chat.

The ChatGPT Chrome extension — when you need your real profile

The extension is where Atlas’s agentic features went. It runs as a side panel in Chrome (and Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi), keeps context across open tabs and can run browser tasks from the desktop app. OpenAI directs users to it when a task depends on an existing Chrome profile, open tabs or authenticated sessions stored in Chrome. The trade-off is the mirror image of the built-in browser: maximum convenience, and an agent operating in the same profile as your bank.

Perplexity Comet — the standalone alternative

Comet remains the most complete standalone AI browser: a real browsing agent, free with usage limits, and the only major option on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. It supports Chromium extensions. Its agent runs inside your logged-in sessions, which is exactly the surface OpenAI chose to wall off. Model choice is Perplexity’s routing, not yours. Gemini in Chrome — the incumbent’s side panel

Gemini in Chrome gives you a Gemini-only assistant plus “auto browse,” which can research and complete multi-step tasks across sites — but auto browse is limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US. It lives in your normal Chrome profile with normal Chrome extensions and Workspace admin policies. It is the natural choice if you already pay Google and want the agent where your tabs are.

Enterprise controls: where OpenAI is ahead

OpenAI’s enterprise browser policy is the most specific agent-browser governance published so far. Workspace admins can:

  • disable the in-app browser entirely;
  • prevent ChatGPT from using websites at all;
  • restrict browser-history access;
  • block imports of cookies, passwords and browsing history from outside browsers;
  • set site-level rules for access, uploads, downloads and advanced browser control.

Users cannot override those rules with their own approvals. Which to choose

  • You want one place where ChatGPT works and you work, with your password manager, and you are willing to sign in fresh: the built-in browser, now that extensions exist.
  • The task needs sessions already in Chrome: the Chrome extension — but keep a separate Chrome profile for agent use.
  • You want an agent browser on your phone, or you are not a ChatGPT subscriber: Comet.
  • You live in Google Workspace and pay for AI Pro/Ultra: Gemini in Chrome.
  • You manage a fleet: the ChatGPT desktop browser is the only one with per-site, non-overridable agent policy today.
