Cheapest AI Coding Subscription 2026: Plans Compared
The Short Answer
For 2026, the coding-subscription price ladder looks like this: GitHub Copilot Pro $10/mo (cheapest mainstream), GLM Coding Plan from $18/mo (most model per dollar since GLM-5.3), Cursor Pro / Claude Pro $20/mo (best IDE / best light agentic), Copilot Pro+ $39/mo, and Claude Max $100-$200/mo (heavy agentic coding). Free tiers and local open-weight models cover the $0 end.
The Ladder, Compared
| Plan | Price | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copilot Free / Cursor Hobby / Windsurf Free | $0 | Limited completions/requests | Trying things out |
| Local open weights | $0 + GPU | Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, DeepSeek V4 (MIT), Muse Glimmer 30B | Privacy, unlimited usage |
| GitHub Copilot Pro | $10/mo | Unlimited completions (no credits used) + AI Credit allowance; usage-based since Jun 1, 2026 (1 credit = $0.01) | Cheapest always-on assistant |
| GLM Coding Plan | from $18/mo | GLM-5.3 (Aug 14, 2026) — Terminal-Bench 3.0 28.3-class coding; 50% off-peak points | Most agentic capability per dollar |
| Cursor Pro | $20/mo | The leading AI IDE, multi-model | IDE-centric workflows |
| Claude Pro | $20/mo | Claude apps + Claude Code with standard limits | Light agentic coding |
| Copilot Pro+ | $39/mo | Larger credit allowance ($70-class), premium models | Heavier Copilot users |
| Claude Max | $100-$200/mo | High limits for Claude Code + Opus 5; Fable 5 access (50% weekly cap tier) | Daily long-running agents |
| Copilot Max | $100/mo | Top Copilot credit tier | Copilot power users |
Three Honest Recommendations
1. Most developers: $10 Copilot Pro + one agentic tool. Copilot’s completions don’t burn credits, so $10 buys the always-on layer; add Claude Pro or the GLM Coding Plan when you need an agent that finishes multi-file tasks.
2. Best value in raw model power: GLM Coding Plan ($18). Since August 14, 2026 it fronts GLM-5.3 — the model whose Terminal-Bench 3.0 score jumped 4.6 → 28.3. Caveats: API-side pricing games (peak hours 14:00-18:00 UTC+8 cost double points), mandatory thinking, and data residency with a Chinese provider may rule it out at work. Details: GLM-5.3 explained.
3. Heavy agentic users: Claude Max. If Claude Code runs hours daily, Pro’s limits will frustrate you; Max ($100/$200 tiers) is priced for exactly that, and it’s the only individual path to Claude Fable 5 (restricted to Max/Team Premium since July 20, 2026).
Don’t Forget the API Math
Subscriptions cap your bill; APIs scale with usage. A light user doing 50 tasks/month on Claude Opus 5 ($0.28/task) pays ~$14 via API — less than most subscriptions. Run the numbers with our price-per-task guide before defaulting to a plan.
