Best AI Coding Setup for a Solo Developer 2026: Plans Compared

Published:

The short answer

Claude Pro ($20) for the agent + Copilot Pro ($10) for completions and PR review = $30 a month covers most solo developers. Swap Claude Pro for ChatGPT Plus ($20, Codex included) if you prefer OpenAI’s models, or take the X Subscription Premium ($30) if you want the Cursor editor with Grok. Pay for a $100 tier only after you hit weekly limits several weeks running. Prices are list USD read from vendor pages on October 16, 2026.

The plans compared

PlanPriceWhat you get for codingBest for

ChatGPT Plus$20/monthCodex (web, CLI, IDE, iOS) with GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna; automatic code reviewOpenAI-model users
GitHub Copilot Pro$10/monthUnlimited completions; 1,500 AI credits (chat, agent mode, CLI, cloud agent, PR review)Completions + GitHub workflow
Copilot Pro+$39/month7,000 AI credits; same featuresHeavy Copilot users
X Subscription Premium$30/monthCursor Pro benefits + Grok; third-party models at API priceCursor editor fans
X Subscription Plus$8/monthCursor with Grok models onlyLowest cost
Claude Maxfrom $100/month5x or 20x Pro usage; $100–$200/month API creditsAgent all day
Copilot Max$100/month20,000 AI creditsCopilot all day

Copilot’s AI credits are worth $0.01 each, so Pro’s 1,500 credits equal $15 of model usage for a $10 subscription; code completions do not consume credits on paid plans.

Why two tools, not one

A solo developer needs two different things:

  1. An agent that reads the repository, runs commands and tests, and makes multi-file changes. Claude Code and Codex are the strongest here; both come with a $20 subscription.
  2. Fast inline help while you type, plus review on pull requests. Copilot Pro does both for $10 and works in VS Code, JetBrains, Xcode and on github.com.

Buying two agent subscriptions ($40+) rarely helps one person; you end up switching tools instead of shipping. Buying one agent and one completion tool covers the whole loop for about $30.

Make the $20 plan last

  • Keep an instructions file (AGENTS.md / CLAUDE.md) so the agent does not re-explore the repo every session.
  • Reset sessions between tasks; long contexts burn limits faster and degrade quality.
  • Use the cheap model for routine work — GPT-6 Luna in Codex or Sonnet in Claude Code — and save the flagship for hard problems.
  • Give the agent tests to run so it finishes in fewer turns.
