What happened to Claude Cowork?

On September 16, 2026 Anthropic announced that Claude Cowork and Claude chat are merging into a single Claude experience. There is no longer a mode to pick: you describe what you need and Claude decides whether to answer directly or take on a larger task — research, reports, spreadsheets with working formulas, presentations — and hand back editable files. Cowork's and Claude Design's capabilities are available from any conversation with your existing context, skills and connectors. The short answer

As of September 16, 2026, “Cowork is now Claude.” Anthropic collapsed its three consumer surfaces — Claude chat, Claude Cowork (the agentic “do bigger work” app) and Claude Design (visual outputs) — into one conversation. You no longer choose a mode; Claude infers whether a request is a quick answer or a multi-step task and, for the latter, works through it and returns finished, editable files. Two new betas shipped the same day: Claude Docs and Claude Slides.

Rollout starts with Pro and Max plans on web, desktop and mobile; Team and Free follow; Enterprise gets 30 days’ notice.

Why Anthropic merged them

Cowork began as a research preview for Max on macOS on January 12, 2026, opened to Pro on January 16, reached GA on macOS and Windows on April 9, and arrived on web and mobile on July 7, when chat and Cowork first shared a home. Claude Design followed on April 17 as an Anthropic Labs product. Cross-surface memory landed on August 25.

Anthropic’s stated reason for the merge is that users found the choosing to be the frustrating part: work started in chat did not carry into Cowork and vice versa. In the unified experience “Claude can now figure out what a task needs,” so Cowork and Design capabilities are reachable from any conversation with the user’s existing context, skills and connectors.

What the unified Claude does

Tasks. Describe an outcome and Claude works the steps — web search, reading files, running code, assembling results. Several tasks can run at once; longer tasks continue in the cloud after you close the laptop. Tasks that touch local files or apps need Claude Desktop open. Recurring tasks can be scheduled to run in the cloud, and you can check on or redirect a task from the mobile app.

Connectors and browsing. Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365 and Slack connectors work during tasks. Claude can browse with the browser built into Claude Desktop or your own Chrome via Claude in Chrome. Computer use — clicking, typing and navigating the screen — is in beta on Pro and Max.

Permissions. A setting in the message box controls autonomy: Manual (default) asks before Claude takes actions; Auto lets it keep working with automated safety checks before each action. The setting applies to the whole conversation and can be changed any time; you can stop or redirect Claude mid-task.

Outputs. Spreadsheets with working formulas, presentations that open in PowerPoint, documents, mockups. Anthropic’s worked example: ask what moved in the pipeline this week, tell Claude to write the usual report, flag slips, and put highlights into five slides — report and deck come out of one conversation.

All three produce a single shareable link that opens on a phone. Per Anthropic’s Help Center, Design makes visuals, Slides makes presentations, and Docs makes documents that can be shared by link or exported.

Migration details that matter

Nothing to turn on. The rollout is staged; the tell that you have it is a single input box with no Chat/Cowork switch. Once migrated, there is no going back.
