Quick Answer

Claude Opus 5 vs Fable 5: Which One in 2026?

Published:

The Short Answer

Default to Claude Opus 5 — it’s cheaper, broadly available, and tops the coding/agentic indexes. Reserve Claude Fable 5 for tasks where its frontier reasoning edge is worth double the price and the tighter plan access.

Why Opus 5 Is the Default

Opus 5 shipped July 24, 2026 at the same $5/$25 as Opus 4.8 but with a big capability jump: it tops the coding and agentic indexes, SWE-bench Pro 79.2%, ARC-AGI-3 ~30.2%, and leads GDPval knowledge-work Elo. It’s now the default Opus, with 1M context, 128K max output, and a lowered 512-token cache minimum.

When Fable 5 Earns Its Premium

Fable 5 remains a frontier reasoning model and on some indexes edges ahead on the very hardest reasoning. But it’s 2x the price and, since July 20, 2026, restricted to Max / Team-Premium plans with a 50% weekly cap. That combination makes it a specialist pick, not a default.

What to Do

  1. Default to Opus 5 for coding, agents, and general work.
  2. Escalate to Fable 5 only when a task clearly rewards its reasoning edge and you have plan access.
  3. Keep the model a config value so you can route per task.
