Do Claude Console API Credits Transfer to the Claude App?
The short answer
No — Claude Console API credits do not transfer to the Claude app, even on the same account and email address. As of October 2026, Anthropic runs two separate billing systems. The Claude Console sells prepaid credits for the Claude API, the playground and Claude Code used with Console credentials. Claude subscriptions (Free, Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise) pay for the Claude apps on web, desktop and mobile, and for Claude Code signed in with the plan. Anthropic’s help centre says a paid subscription “doesn’t include access to the Claude API or Console”, and the reverse is also true: API credit cannot pay for app usage.
Where each kind of credit works
| Balance | Bought in | Pays for | Does not pay for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Console API credits | Console → Settings → Billing → Buy credits | Claude API calls, Console playground, Claude Code with Console login | Claude apps, Pro/Max plan, plan usage limits |
| Pro / Max / Team subscription | claude.ai | Claude apps, Claude Code with plan login, plan features | Claude API |
| Usage credits on a paid plan | claude.ai → Settings → Usage | App and plan usage beyond your limit, at standard API rates | Claude API calls from your own code |
So there are three balances, not one. Usage credits look like API credits — both bill at API rates — but they live on your Claude app account and only extend your plan.
What to do in common situations
“I bought $20 of API credit by mistake and wanted more app usage.” The credit stays in your Console organisation for API use; it will not appear in the app. Contact Anthropic support through the help centre about refunds rather than expecting a transfer. If you wanted more app usage, the right products are a higher plan (Max starts at $100 a month) or usage credits on your current plan.
“I want to use Claude from my own code and in the app.” You need both: a subscription for the app and a Console account with credits for the API. Prices for the API are per token — Claude Sonnet 5.5 is $2/$10 and Opus 5.5 $4/$20 per million input/output tokens; see our current API prices.
“I use Claude Code and keep hitting my plan limit.” If Claude Code also holds Console credentials, it offers to continue on API credits at standard API rates, and auto-reload in the Console can top up automatically. To stay on the plan only, decline the API option, check your remaining allowance with /status, or run claude logout and log back in with only your plan credentials.
“I hit my Pro limit in the app and want to keep going.” Enable usage credits under Settings → Usage, set a monthly spend limit, and add funds. Mobile-app subscribers must enable them on the web.
Why the systems are separate
The API is metered per token for developers and organisations, often with several members, admin roles and invoices; subscriptions are per person with usage limits that reset every five hours. Keeping the balances apart prevents an automated API job from silently consuming someone’s app allowance — but it does mean that money in one system cannot move to the other.
