Gemini 3.5 Pro Still Not GA: What to Use Instead
The Short Answer
Gemini 3.5 Pro is still not generally available as of July 26, 2026. It’s in limited Vertex AI enterprise preview after two slipped targets:
- Announced at Google I/O, May 19, 2026
- Original GA target: June 2026 → pushed to July 2026
- Rumored July 17 launch → passed without a broad public release
Google shipped the Flash tier instead (Gemini 3.6 Flash and 3.5 Flash-Lite on July 21), but the flagship Pro model remains pending — reportedly held for quality refinements after enterprise testing, amid reports of senior researchers leaving for Anthropic.
Current Gemini Lineup (July 2026)
| Model | Status | $/MTok in | $/MTok out | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini 3.6 Flash | GA (default since Jul 21) | $1.50 | $7.50 | Up to 65% fewer output tokens vs 3.5 Flash |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash | Being sunset | $1.50 | $9.00 | Replaced by 3.6 |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite | GA (Jul 21) | $0.30 | $2.50 | Cheap tier |
| Gemini 3.1 Pro | GA | $2.00 | $12.00 | Current usable Pro tier |
| Gemini 3.5 Pro | Preview only | $15* | $60* | *Announced pricing; not GA |
What to Use Instead (Right Now)
Staying on Google’s stack:
- Gemini 3.6 Flash ($1.50/$7.50) — the new default workhorse, faster and cheaper per task thanks to ~65% output-token reduction. Best everyday pick.
- Gemini 3.1 Pro ($2/$12) — if you need a “Pro”-class Gemini today, this is the GA option.
If you want frontier quality now (any provider):
- Claude Opus 4.8 ($5/$25) — hardest reasoning and agentic coding.
- GPT-5.6 Sol ($5/$30) — top composite on the Artificial Analysis Index.
- Claude Sonnet 5 ($2/$10 intro through Aug 31) or Grok 4.5 ($2/$6) — best value workhorses.
Should You Wait for 3.5 Pro?
Only if you’re locked to Google and need the top Gemini tier. Two things to weigh:
- Timing risk — it has missed two targets; a firm GA date still isn’t confirmed.
- Price — announced at $15/$60 per MTok, it would be one of the most expensive frontier models. At that rate, Opus 4.8 ($5/$25) and Sol ($5/$30) are cheaper for comparable frontier work.
For most teams, run Gemini 3.6 Flash now and re-evaluate when 3.5 Pro actually ships GA with confirmed pricing — don’t block a project waiting on a preview.
