Gemini Enterprise for Legal & Finance: What Launched
The Short Answer
On August 25, 2026, Google Cloud announced two vertical editions of its agent platform: Gemini Enterprise for Legal and Gemini Enterprise for Financial Services.
Both package the same three things: domain-specific skills, pre-built connectors to industry systems of record, and task-completing agents inside a governed control plane. Gemini Enterprise for Legal launched in preview.
The strategic point is not model capability. It is that Google is competing on integration and governance rather than benchmarks — a bet that in regulated industries, the connector list and the audit trail close deals that model scores do not.

What the Vertical Editions Actually Add
The underlying models are Gemini. What changes is everything around them.
Domain skills. Pre-built capabilities scoped to the profession rather than generic prompting — drafting and review patterns for legal work, analysis patterns for financial professionals. This is the part that removes months of prompt engineering from a deployment.
Connectors to systems of record. This is the substantive differentiator. Legal work lives in document management systems: iManage, NetDocuments, Everlaw. Financial analysis lives in market data: FactSet, S&P Global. An agent that cannot reach those systems is a demo. Pre-built, supported connectors turn a six-month integration project into a configuration exercise.
A governed control plane. Agents that take actions in regulated environments need permissioning, audit trails and policy enforcement that survive an examiner’s questions. Google is packaging that rather than leaving each customer to construct it.
Why Verticals, and Why Now
Through 2025 and most of 2026 the enterprise AI pitch was horizontal: here is a platform, bring your own use cases. The results were uneven, and the reason was consistent — the model was rarely the bottleneck. Integration, permissions and domain configuration were.
Vertical editions are the industry’s answer. They front-load the unglamorous work: which systems does this profession actually use, what does the audit trail need to contain, what does a compliant agent action look like in this domain.
That has two consequences worth naming.
It shifts competition away from benchmarks. If the deciding factor is whether the platform speaks to iManage, model leaderboards stop being the sales conversation. Google, Microsoft and Salesforce are all converging on this, and it favours whoever has the deepest enterprise integration surface rather than the highest score.
It raises switching costs. A horizontal platform you configured yourself is portable — the configuration is yours. A vertical edition with vendor-maintained connectors and vendor-defined skills is stickier by design. That is the trade being offered: faster deployment in exchange for deeper coupling.
What Buyers Should Check
Preview is not GA. Gemini Enterprise for Legal launched in preview. For regulated deployments that distinction is material — feature sets, commercial terms and support commitments can all move before general availability. Confirm current status directly with Google Cloud rather than from launch coverage.
Connector coverage is the real spec sheet. The named integrations are a starting list, not the whole industry. If your firm runs a document system that is not on it, the vertical edition’s main advantage does not apply to you. Ask for the full, current connector list before assuming coverage.
Governance claims need testing against your regulator, not the vendor’s description. “Governed control plane” is a product category, not a compliance certification. The relevant question is whether the audit output satisfies your specific supervisory regime.
Model access still follows the marketplace route. Buying through Google Cloud means your model roadmap tracks Google’s catalogue and release schedule, with the usual regional premium over direct API rates. That is a reasonable trade for governance, but it is a trade.
How It Compares to the Alternatives
The horizontal-versus-vertical decision is the real one.
Take the vertical edition if your profession’s systems of record are on the connector list, you want deployment measured in weeks rather than quarters, and governance is a binding constraint rather than a preference. You are paying in switching cost for time.
Build on base Gemini Enterprise, or a competing horizontal platform, if your workflows are unusual, your systems are not covered, or you have the engineering capacity to own the integration layer. You keep portability and control at the cost of a longer runway.
The question that separates them: is your bottleneck the model, or the plumbing? For most legal and financial deployments in 2026, it has been the plumbing — which is exactly the bet these editions represent.
