Quick Answer

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 vs Meta Audio vs VR Glasses vs Muse Charm

Published:

The short answer

Meta’s Connect 2026 keynote on September 23 was a line-up, not a single launch, and the right pick depends on whether you want a camera, a screen, or just the agent. Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3) at $449 is the mainstream choice and the world’s best-selling AI glasses, now slimmer with an extra hour of battery. Ray-Ban Meta Audio at $349 is the same assistant with the camera removed, the first Meta glasses you can wear where cameras are unwelcome. Meta VR Glasses at $1,299.99 are the headline but do not arrive until spring 2027. Muse Charm is a pocket device for the Muse agent with no price and a December target. Every one of them ships with Muse Spark, Meta Superintelligence Labs’ in-house model, enabled from day one.

Also announced: Meta Adventurer with plug-in case at $249 (preorder now, on sale October 23, Meta’s most affordable pair), Meta Glasses by Kylie Jenner in Ivory and a LISA collection from $399, the limited-edition Meta Fury, and Ray-Ban Display ($799 US, unchanged) rolling out to Canada (CA$1,149), the UK (£749), France, Italy and Germany (€899, October 13). Meta says it will offer more than 100 glasses options across Ray-Ban, Oakley and Meta Glasses by year end, and is entering Singapore, South Korea, Mexico and the UAE with Brazil next.

Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3): the safe upgrade

Gen 3 is a refinement of the best-selling AI glasses rather than a rethink. What changed from Gen 2 ($379): a slimmer frame with professional-adjustable temple tips, up to nine hours of battery (one more than Gen 2), a six-microphone array that cuts over 90% of background noise, and a customizable action button for one-press access to Meta AI. The 12 MP camera and 3K video carry over, with new dynamic photos that let you choose the best frame after the fact. Later in 2026 Meta glasses become the first consumer devices to capture Dolby Atmos 360-degree spatial video. Three styles: Aviator (including a 90th-anniversary vintage colorway), the new cat-eye Zena, and Wayfarer. The $70 price rise over Gen 2 is the trade for the battery and mics.

Ray-Ban Meta Audio: the camera-free option

Audio is the more interesting product. It removes the camera entirely, which makes it the first Meta glasses that can be worn in offices with camera bans, in hospitals, at schools or anywhere the capture LED makes people uneasy, a concern that flared again this week when Meta pulled a Dutch satirist’s Ray-Ban privacy video from Instagram. At 43 grams it is Meta’s lightest and slimmest frame, with up to 12 hours on a charge plus 48 more from the case, and it keeps everything else: music and podcasts, calls that Meta says capture your voice more clearly than earbuds, and hands-free conversation with the assistant and the Muse agent. Reporting before the show called this product “Luna”; the shipping name is Ray-Ban Meta Audio.

Meta VR Glasses: Phoenix, priced above the rumor

The headset formerly reported as Project Phoenix arrived as Meta VR Glasses: about 100 grams on the face, micro-OLED at 37 pixels per degree, and a roughly 300-gram Snapdragon Reality Elite puck on an optical tether that holds compute, battery and storage. Meta pitches it as a personal cinema (IMAX Enhanced, Disney+ 3D from November, James Cameron’s Lightstorm Vision 3D releases in 2027), a courtside seat (100-plus live sports events a year), a workspace and a gaming console (75-plus games playable with hand gestures at launch). Hologram calling on Codec Avatars ships with it and works in apps from WhatsApp to Zoom; Ray-Ban Display gets hologram calls in US early access this fall.

Two numbers disappointed. The Wall Street Journal had reported a sub-$1,000 target in 2025; the price is $1,299.99. And it does not ship until spring 2027, with no preorders. Controllers are optional and sold separately. There was no new Quest and no Quest 4 news at all. Muse Charm: the agent in your pocket

The surprise of the keynote was Muse Charm, a small handheld or keychain device for Meta’s Muse personal AI agent. It descends from Meta’s December 2025 purchase of Limitless, whose $99 pendant recorded conversations and was discontinued after the acquisition. Meta gave no price and said it wants the device ready for the December holidays. The logic is coverage: glasses are the ideal Muse surface but not everyone wears them, so Charm gives the agent a body that lives on a keyring. Zuckerberg used the same week to reject the Amodei–Altman slowdown proposals, saying Meta’s Sentinel agent oversees Muse to prevent overreach.

Decision rule

  • Want photos and video from your face: Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3), $449.
  • Want the assistant and earbuds replacement without a camera: Ray-Ban Meta Audio, $349, October 13.
  • Cheapest entry into Meta AI glasses: Meta Adventurer with plug-in case, $249, October 23.
  • Want a heads-up display today: Ray-Ban Display, $799, now in five more countries.
  • Want the ultralight headset: wait for Meta VR Glasses, $1,299.99, spring 2027.
  • Want Muse without wearing anything: Muse Charm, price and date pending.
