Quick Answer

Reducto Alternatives: PDF-to-Text APIs Compared (2026)

Published:

The short answer

Reducto is priced for accuracy on hard documents. If what you mostly need is PDF-to-text or PDF-to-markdown, you can pay a fraction of its price. As of October 25, 2026:

  • Mistral OCR 4.1 — cheapest hosted pick: $4 per 1,000 pages, $2 in batch, markdown with paragraph-level bounding boxes and confidence scores.
  • Datalab — the hosted API from the makers of the open-source Marker and Surya: $0.50 per 1,000 pages (Convert lite) to $10 (accurate).
  • LlamaParse — best if your pipeline already uses LlamaIndex: tiered parsing billed in credits (1,000 credits = $1.25, 10,000 free a month).
  • Docling or MinerU — self-host, no per-page fee.
  • Stay on Reducto for audited field extraction, BAAs and on-prem.

Reducto’s price, for reference

Reducto’s pricing page lists r-1 Parse $10, Extract $20, Deep Extract $40, Split $20, Deep Split $40, Classify $7.50 and Edit $60 per 1,000 pages, with 20% off Parse and Extract in batch, $150 of free usage on the Standard plan and 200 guaranteed concurrent pages. Growth (custom price) adds volume discounts, zero data retention, a BAA, EU/AU endpoints and premium rate limits; Enterprise adds VPC/on-prem, SSO/SAML and custom SLAs. Reducto also offers up to $5,000 in migration credits to teams leaving another processor — worth knowing if you are negotiating.

The alternatives, one by one

Mistral OCR 4.1. Released July 16, 2026, the current mistral-ocr-latest. The model card lists $4 per 1,000 pages and $5 per 1,000 annotated pages; Mistral’s OCR 4 launch post confirms the 50% Batch API discount to $2. Output carries paragraph-level boxes, block labels and block-level confidence — enough to cite sources in a RAG answer and to route low-confidence blocks to review. The weakest point versus Reducto is schema extraction on ugly scans.

Datalab. Its rate card is per processor: Convert lite $0.50 (fast CPU OCR: text, tables, lists; no images or LLM passes), Convert fast/balanced $4, Convert accurate $10, Extraction turbo/fast $6, balanced $15 and accurate $20 (about 5% of balanced and accurate extractions bill above the fixed rate). The free tier includes $20 of usage a month on a work email ($10 on a personal one); Team is $400 a month with $400 of usage, a BAA and 400 requests a minute. EU data residency costs 1.25× usage. If you already like Marker’s output and do not want to run GPUs, this is the closest swap.

LlamaParse. LlamaIndex’s hosted parser bills in credits — 1,000 credits = $1.25, with 10,000 free credits a month, Starter (40,000 credits included) and Pro (400,000). Basic parsing costs as little as one credit a page; agentic tiers with LLM or VLM passes cost more, and Auto Mode routes each page to the cheapest tier that works (LlamaIndex says up to 80% savings). Supports 130+ formats and returns markdown, per-page JSON, XLSX and annotated PDFs.

Docling. MIT-licensed, under the LF AI & Data Foundation, v2.142.1 released October 23, 2026. Parses PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, HTML, images and more into a lossless JSON model plus markdown; integrates with LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI and Haystack and ships an MCP server. The default when documents cannot leave your network.

MinerU (latest 4.0.12, October 11, 2026) is strong on academic and mixed Chinese/English PDFs, formulas and tables; its licence is Apache-2.0 with additional commercial terms and thresholds, so read them before shipping it in a product. Unstructured’s open-source library (Apache-2.0, 0.27.34 on October 22, 2026) partitions documents into typed elements, useful when PDFs are only part of a mixed corpus.

Which one for which job

  1. Plain PDF-to-text or markdown for RAG, cloud allowed → Mistral OCR 4.1 batch.
  2. Lowest price for clean digital PDFs → Datalab Convert lite, or Docling on a CPU box.
  3. Already on LlamaIndex → LlamaParse with Auto Mode.
  4. Nothing may leave the building → Docling (or MinerU after a licence check).
  5. Invoices, claims and contracts where a wrong field costs money → stay on Reducto Extract or Deep Extract.
