Mistral OCR vs Docling vs Reducto: Which to Use in 2026
The short answer
Pick by where the documents may go and what you need back. As of October 21, 2026:
- Mistral OCR 4.1 — the best-value hosted OCR: $4 per 1,000 pages, $2 in batch, markdown with bounding boxes and confidence scores. Default for RAG ingestion and general OCR when a cloud API is allowed.
- Docling — the open-source pick: MIT licence, runs locally, no per-page fee. Default when documents cannot leave your network or volume makes any per-page price painful.
- Reducto — the accuracy and compliance pick for hard documents: Parse $10, Extract $20, Deep Extract $40 per 1,000 pages, cited schema extraction, zero data retention and a BAA on Growth.
Many teams use two of the three: Docling for bulk, a hosted API for the hard pages.
The comparison
| Mistral OCR 4.1 | Docling | Reducto | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Hosted OCR model/API (mistral-ocr-4-1) | Open-source Python library, CLI and API server | Hosted parse, extract, split, classify platform |
| Price | $4 / 1,000 pages · $2 batch · $5 / 1,000 annotated pages | $0 + your compute | Parse $10 · Extract $20 · Deep Extract $40 · Classify $7.50 per 1,000 pages; −20% batch on Parse and Extract |
| Free start | Studio free plan / trial credits | Unlimited | $150 of usage (15,000 credits) |
| Output | Markdown, paragraph-level bounding boxes, block labels, block confidence | DoclingDocument JSON, Markdown, HTML, DocTags | Structured blocks and markdown; schema JSON with citations and boxes |
| Inputs | PDFs and images | PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, HTML, EPUB, images, audio, email and more | 30+ file types incl. PDF, images, Office, spreadsheets |
| Languages | 170 (per Mistral’s OCR 4 launch) | Depends on the OCR engine you plug in | Multilingual OCR |
| Where it runs | Mistral cloud (self-deployment via enterprise contract) | Your laptop, server or air-gapped cluster | Reducto cloud; EU/AU endpoints on Growth; VPC/on-prem on Enterprise |
| Compliance extras | Mistral enterprise terms | Whatever your own environment provides | ZDR, HIPAA BAA, SSO/SAML, RBAC (Growth/Enterprise) |

Mistral OCR 4.1 — the hosted default
Mistral released OCR 4 on June 23, 2026 and OCR 4.1 on July 16, 2026; OCR 4.0 is now listed as retired in Mistral’s model docs, and mistral-ocr-latest points to 4.1. The model card lists $4 per 1,000 pages and $5 per 1,000 annotated pages, and the Batch API halves the OCR price to $2 per 1,000 pages. OCR 4.1 adds paragraph-level bounding boxes, structural block labels and block-level confidence scores, which is what you need to show citations in a RAG answer or to route low-confidence blocks to human review.
Choose it when a cloud API is acceptable and you want the lowest price per accurate page. Skip it when you need prebuilt invoice or ID schemas out of the box (use a hyperscaler or Reducto) or when nothing may leave your network.
Docling — the open-source workhorse
Docling is MIT-licensed and maintained under the LF AI & Data Foundation; v2.141.0 shipped on October 20, 2026, and the project releases several times a month. It parses far more than PDFs — DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, HTML, EPUB, Apple iWork, email, LaTeX and audio via ASR — and exports a lossless JSON document model plus Markdown and HTML. It understands page layout, reading order, table structure, code and formulas, can call vision-language models such as GraniteDocling, and its current release notes add NVIDIA’s Nemotron-3.5-Parse as a supported VLM. It also ships an MCP server and an API server, and plugs into LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI and Haystack.
Choose it for air-gapped or regulated environments, for Office-heavy corpora, and for high volume where per-page fees dominate. Budget for GPU time if you turn on VLM pipelines, and for your own evaluation and tuning — there is no vendor to escalate a bad table to.
Reducto — accuracy and audit trails
Reducto prices each endpoint separately: r-1 Parse $10, Extract $20 (parsing included), Deep Extract $40, Split $20, Deep Split $40, Classify $7.50 (first five pages), Deep Classify $15 and Edit $60 per 1,000 pages, with 20% off Parse and Extract in batch and $150 of free usage. Standard accounts get 200 guaranteed concurrent pages; Growth adds volume discounts, zero data retention, a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement, EU/AU data-residency endpoints and unlimited Studio seats; VPC and on-prem deployment are Enterprise options. Reducto also offers up to $5,000 in migration credits for teams moving from another processor.
Choose it for contracts, claims, financial statements and scanned forms where every extracted field must be traceable to a box on the page. It is the most expensive per page and often the cheapest per correct field.
Which one for which job
- RAG over a mixed document store, cloud allowed → Mistral OCR 4.1 batch.
- Nothing may leave the building → Docling, with a GPU node for VLM mode.
- Field extraction from ugly scans with an audit trail → Reducto Extract or Deep Extract.
- Millions of pages, tight budget → Docling first pass, Mistral batch for the pages Docling scores poorly.
- Healthcare data in the cloud → Reducto Growth (BAA) or your hyperscaler’s covered service.
