Quick Answer

What Is Robinhood Agents? AI Agents That Trade for You

Published:

The short answer

Robinhood Agents, announced September 29, 2026 at HOOD Summit in Houston, lets any Robinhood customer build a named AI agent inside the app that can research markets, construct strategies and place trades — from a dedicated account it cannot exceed, with manual trade approval on by default. It is the first mass-market consumer product to hand an LLM discretionary authority over a person’s money, and it is “coming soon” to eligible U.S. customers rather than live today. OpenAI’s GPT-Luna is free to use inside it through December 31, 2026. Facts verified October 1, 2026.

How it works

  1. Name your agent and open a dedicated agentic trading account. The agent can only access funds you move into that account.
  2. Pick a model “from several leading AI labs including OpenAI.” Robinhood has named only OpenAI’s GPT-Luna so far (free through year-end); other labs are unspecified.
  3. Chat, research, trade. The agent has access to the dozens of market-data sources in the Robinhood Trading MCP plus your portfolio data. It can analyse the market, propose a strategy and execute it without you leaving the app.
  4. Set your controls. “Manually approve each trade” is shown during setup and defaults to on; you can change it any time.
  5. Loops (coming soon). Turn a strategy into a standing instruction — “check the market every morning and buy if X,” or a continuous overnight scan — that the agent runs on repeat, including outside market hours. Loops can be switched off whenever you like.

Agent Apps: the data layer

By default the agent sees Robinhood’s own market data. Agent Apps add premium feeds from 11 providers, each with a one-month free trial:

This is the business model: Robinhood takes the agent-platform position and sells a marketplace of data subscriptions on top, the way a phone sells apps.

What was announced alongside it

  • 24/7 weekend equities trading, pending regulatory review, extending the Sunday 8 p.m. – Friday 8 p.m. ET 24 Hour Market to a curated list of stocks and ETFs, via Bruce ATS. Targeted for early 2027.
  • Perpetual futures on BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, DOGE, ADA, LINK and HYPE for eligible U.S. customers, up to 10x leverage on BTC/ETH (3x elsewhere), one basis point per trade through year-end, via Robinhood Derivatives and Bitstamp.
  • Earnings contracts on key company metrics (Cboe-backed prediction markets) ahead of Q3 earnings. HOOD rose roughly 4.7% premarket on September 30.

Why it matters

Robinhood’s May 2026 agentic-trading launch was for people who already ran their own agents: 150,000 accounts and ~30 million tool calls a day in four months. Robinhood Agents removes the technical barrier entirely, and Loops removes the human from the loop. That combination — a consumer LLM with standing authority to move money, running unattended at 3 a.m. — is exactly the pattern regulators flagged this week: the FTC confirmed a probe of OpenAI and Anthropic over autonomous-agent risks on September 30, and the White House accord signed September 29 commits labs to “robust internal controls.” Robinhood’s controls (ring-fenced account, approval default-on, kill switch on Loops) are the right shape; whether retail users keep approval on is the open question.

Risks to understand before you fund one

  • Model choice is your risk. GPT-Luna is OpenAI’s cheapest tier ($0.10/$0.50 per million tokens on the API), not its most capable; “free” is a promotion through December 31, 2026.
  • Loops run on stale premises. A standing instruction written in a bull tape executes in a crash unless you turn it off.
  • Hallucinated signals. Agents will confidently misread a chart or a filing. Agent Apps reduce but do not eliminate this.
  • Not live yet. “Coming soon to eligible U.S. customers”; no date, no fee schedule for the agents themselves beyond standard commissions and Agent App subscriptions.
