Akamai vs Cloudflare for Enterprise AI Semantic Search
The short answer
Cloudflare sells semantic search as a product; Akamai sells the infrastructure to build it. As of November 8, 2026:
- Pick Cloudflare (AI Search, or Vectorize + Workers AI) when you want enterprise documents searchable in days, with ingestion, OCR, embedding, hybrid search and global serving managed for you.
- Pick Akamai (managed PostgreSQL + pgvector on Akamai Cloud, models on Akamai Inference Cloud) when you need to control the database, the embedding model and the permissions model, or you already run security and delivery on Akamai contracts.
The comparison
| Cloudflare | Akamai | |
|---|---|---|
| Semantic search product | AI Search (managed RAG/search) and Vectorize (vector DB) | None packaged; build with pgvector on managed PostgreSQL |
| Ingestion & OCR | Managed: files, website crawl, OCR on every account | You build the pipeline |
| Search types | Semantic, full-text, hybrid; cross-instance search (up to 10 instances) | Whatever Postgres supports: vector + SQL filters + full-text in one query |
| Embedding / LLM models | Workers AI and configurable models | Your own models on Akamai Inference Cloud (NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell) |
| Distribution | Cloudflare’s global network | AI Grid orchestration across ~4,400 locations, with semantic caching and routing |
| Permissions | Metadata filters (5 custom fields per instance) | SQL row-level filters next to the vector query |
| Pricing (list, Nov 8, 2026) | AI Search free until Dec 1, 2026; then $0.75/1M ingestion tokens, $2/GB-month, $0.75 per 1,000 semantic queries | Compute, database and GPU usage; enterprise contracts |
| Limits to know | 1M files per instance (500K with hybrid), 10 MiB per OCR PDF | Your database sizing |

Cloudflare: semantic search as a managed service
AI Search takes a data source (an R2 bucket, uploaded files or a website crawl of up to 100,000 pages), chunks it, embeds it, indexes it and answers queries. OCR is available on every account, PDFs with OCR can be up to 10 MiB, and an instance holds up to 1 million files, or 500,000 with hybrid search turned on. You can query several instances in one request, which suits per-department or per-customer indexes.
Billing starts December 1, 2026. Each account then gets 5 million ingestion tokens, 10 GB-month of storage and 1,000 semantic plus 1,000 full-text queries a month. Beyond that: $0.75 per million ingestion tokens (an extra $0.50 per million for image processing), $2.00 per GB-month, $0.75 per 1,000 semantic, vector or hybrid queries and $0.10 per 1,000 full-text queries.
If you want to own the pipeline but not the database, Vectorize is Cloudflare’s serverless vector store: Workers Paid includes 50 million queried and 10 million stored dimensions a month, then $0.01 per million queried dimensions and $0.05 per 100 million stored dimensions, with no charge for idle indexes.
Where it falls short: five custom metadata fields per instance and 64 indexed bytes per string make fine-grained row-level permissions awkward, and you are tied to Cloudflare’s runtime.
Akamai: build it on infrastructure you control
Akamai’s developer guidance for semantic search is pgvector, the open-source PostgreSQL extension, on Akamai’s managed PostgreSQL. Its argument: relational data and vectors live in one database, and one SQL query can combine semantic similarity with filters such as document category or user permissions. Akamai also offers a one-click pgvector deployment in its cloud marketplace.
For the models, Akamai Inference Cloud runs on NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs. In March 2026 Akamai launched AI Grid intelligent orchestration, which routes inference across about 4,400 edge locations and applies semantic caching and routing to cut cost per token and time to first token.
Where it falls short: you build and operate ingestion, chunking, OCR, re-embedding on updates and evaluation yourself, or pay a partner to.
Picks by situation
- Searchable internal docs or a support knowledge base this quarter: Cloudflare AI Search.
- Custom pipeline, managed vectors, global low latency: Cloudflare Vectorize + Workers AI.
- Strict row-level permissions or regulated data you want in your own Postgres: Akamai managed PostgreSQL + pgvector.
- Self-hosted or fine-tuned embedding and generation models near users: Akamai Inference Cloud.
- Already standardized on Akamai for security and delivery: Akamai, and compare the build cost against a managed vector service.
