Quick Answer

Avoca AI vs Answering Services: 2026 Company Evaluation

Published:

The short answer

An answering service answers the phone; Avoca AI tries to run the front office. That difference decides the choice more than price. As of October 20, 2026:

  • Pick Avoca AI if you are a multi-location or PE-backed HVAC, plumbing, electrical or roofing operator on ServiceTitan, losing calls after hours and at peaks, and you want calls booked, not just taken. Quote only.
  • Pick a human answering service (Ruby) if you take under a few hundred minutes a month and many calls need judgement, empathy or a legal intake script.
  • Pick an AI receptionist with published prices (Smith.ai AI-first, Sameday AI) if you want 24/7 AI answering and booking without an enterprise contract.

Where Avoca beats an answering service

It converts calls into booked revenue. A traditional service takes a message and the job is booked the next morning — by which time the customer has called a competitor. Avoca books directly into the schedule. In its Granite Comfort case study, nine call centres became one, nine after-hours vendors became zero, and the pilot brand grew revenue 20% year over year, which Avoca attributes mainly to calls it captured that the team had been losing.

It works the calls nobody answers. Unsold estimates, missed calls and capacity gaps become outbound campaigns.

Its cost does not scale with minutes the same way. Human services price per minute or per call; at 500 minutes Ruby is $1,725 a month, and peak weeks cost more.

Where an answering service still wins

  • Low volume. At 50–100 minutes a month, Ruby at $250–$395 or Smith.ai’s free AI tier is cheaper than any enterprise AI contract.
  • Judgement calls. Emergencies, upset customers, legal and medical intake still go better with a person. Smith.ai’s hybrid plans and Avoca’s human-in-the-loop exist for this reason.
  • No CRM to book into. If you schedule on paper or a shared calendar, Avoca’s main advantage disappears.

How to evaluate in 30 days

  1. Pull 30 days of call logs: total calls, after-hours share, missed calls, booked jobs.
  2. Route after-hours and overflow only to the AI; keep your current service on everything else.
  3. Compare booked jobs per 100 calls, complaints and average ticket for both routes.
  4. Price the result per booked job, not per minute.
