Pick ChatGPT Images 2.5 if you need the model to do exactly what you said — layouts, precise edits, transparent PNGs, text in any script. Pick Nano Banana Pro for 4K and heavy conversational editing at the lowest per-image cost. Pick Midjourney V8.2 if you want the most beautiful first draft and do not need an API.
ChatGPT Images 2.5: what changed on September 8, 2026
OpenAI describes Images 2.5 as its “new state-of-the-art image model” with three headline improvements over Images 2.0 (April 21, 2026): sharper detail and more natural lighting, more precise editing that changes only what you asked for across multiple turns, and up to 50% lower latency. Reference-photo fidelity is better — subjects stay recognisable when restyled — and complex layouts, including transparent backgrounds, are now handled natively.
The ChatGPT product features matter for non-developers:
- Sketch — type
@Sketch, draw a rough layout in ChatGPT, and the model uses it as a composition guide. - Templates — Images → Templates for posters, merch, product photos and flyers.
- Image comments — pin a note to a region of the image for a focused edit.
- Prompt sharing — share an image with its prompt so others can rerun it with their own photos.
Availability is unusually broad: all ChatGPT tiers including Free, ChatGPT Work and Codex, on desktop, mobile and web. OpenAI says ChatGPT Images plus the GPT-Image API now produce more than 3 billion images a week.
For developers there are two API models with identical pricing but different roles: GPT-Image-2.5 Flare (fast default; higher quality than GPT-Image-2 at 50% lower latency — Manus reports 2–4x faster) and GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst (base model; tighter control across edits, longer generation). Both add xhigh and max quality tiers above high, support arbitrary resolutions up to 3840×2160, up to 16 reference images, streaming partial images and C2PA metadata. Internal safety evals put unsafe generations at 1.09% (Sunburst) and 1.41% (Flare) versus a 1.64% baseline.
Nano Banana Pro and Nano Banana 2: Google’s editing and 4K specialists
Google’s image line runs on Gemini: Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) is the quality tier, Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) is the high-efficiency tier, and a Nano Banana 2 Lite (Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image) exists for the cheapest, fastest jobs. Google’s older Imagen 4 generate models were shut down on August 17, 2026, with gemini-3.1-flash-image named as the replacement, so “Imagen” is no longer the right answer for Gemini API image work.
Where Nano Banana Pro wins:
- True 4K (4096×4096) at about $0.24 per image, with batch mode roughly halving the 2K rate to ~$0.067 — the cheapest genuine 4K in the market.
- Conversational editing. “Remove the background, keep the reflection, change the jacket to navy” preserves the rest of the frame better than the competition, and it holds a character or product across a series.
- Web-grounded text. Because it runs on Gemini with search grounding, product names, units and UI labels inside infographics are more often factually right.
- Free access. The Gemini app gives three Nano Banana Pro images a day; AI Studio has a free tier.
Where it loses: no native transparent backgrounds, preset (not arbitrary) resolutions, and a maximum of 14 reference images. On the blind-vote arenas Google has been consistently second or third to OpenAI on text-to-image and neck-and-neck on editing.
Midjourney V8.2: the aesthetic outlier
Midjourney made V8.2 the default on July 24, 2026, describing the update as “more creative, bold, sophisticated, and edgy” than V8.1 (which had itself moved to 2048×2048 default output). Its strengths are unchanged: default colour grading, depth of field and lighting that look art-directed out of the box, which is why it dominates concept art, album covers and editorial illustration. Raw mode exists to dial back its habit of “improving” a prompt you wanted rendered literally.
Its limits are structural rather than incremental:
- No API. Subscription only — Basic $10, Standard $30 (15 fast GPU-hours plus unlimited Relax), Pro $60, Mega $120 per month — via web and Discord.
- Weakest precise editing of the three; it is built for first-generation aesthetics, not surgical revision.
- Text rendering improved over V7 but remains unreliable beyond a single stylised word.
- No transparency, no arbitrary sizes.
For a marketing team producing a few hundred polished assets a month, the flat fee is the most predictable bill of the three; for anything programmatic it is not an option.

GPT-Image-2.5 keeps GPT-Image-2’s per-token pricing, so cost depends on quality tier and resolution; OpenAI’s price calculator did not support 2.5 at launch, and per-image token counts for xhigh/max were undocumented, so measure real spend before scaling.
Which should you use?
- Product photography, ads, app-store screenshots, localised creative: ChatGPT Images 2.5 — instruction following, text accuracy and transparency in one model; use Sunburst for campaign-final assets, Flare for everything else.
- Infographics, factual visuals, 4K print, high-volume editing: Nano Banana Pro; Nano Banana 2 for throughput.
- Concept art, mood boards, covers, anything where “beautiful” beats “literal”: Midjourney V8.2.
- Need to own the weights or run offline: none of the three — use FLUX.2 or Stable Diffusion 3.5.
- Hybrid that most studios actually run in 2026: Midjourney for exploration, then GPT Image 2.5 or Nano Banana Pro for the production edit pass.
