Claude for Financial Advisors vs ChatGPT Financial Services
The short answer
Two launches four days apart, aimed at two different desks. OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Financial Services (September 10, 2026) is a research-and-modeling workbench for investment bankers and equity analysts. Anthropic’s Claude for Financial Advisors (September 14, 2026) is a workflow assistant for wealth managers that plugs into custodians and advisor software. Pick by who in your firm will use it, not by which model is smarter this month.

What Claude for Financial Advisors actually does
Anthropic’s pitch is time reallocation: citing Kitces research, it notes a typical practice spends about one-sixth of its time in client meetings and the rest on preparation, planning and documentation. The product is a Cowork plugin — Cowork is the agentic mode in the Claude Desktop app that reads files, plans and executes multi-step tasks — with two layers:
- Connectors to the advisor stack. Schwab Advisor Services custodial data (balances, positions, transactions, cost basis, alerts, money-movement status) through a secure connection on Schwab Advisor Center; BlackRock model portfolios and institutional analytics via BlackRock Advisor Center; Addepar, Envestnet, iCapital, Orion, SS&C Black Diamond, Wealthbox, Wealth.com, Vanguard and Zocks; plus the existing Microsoft 365, Salesforce, DocuSign, Box, FactSet, S&P Global and Morningstar integrations.
- Skills for recurring advisor jobs: pull client-review data, flag portfolio drift against target allocations, draft follow-ups and CRM updates, run compliance checks against rules such as the SEC Marketing Rule for advisor review, brief on alternatives, estate and tax topics.
Anthropic’s Peter Nolan framed it as a “symphony conductor” for the seven-or-so tools an advisor already uses, explicitly not a replacement for them. Schwab is making it available to its network of more than 16,000 independent RIAs. Claude will not give explicit investment advice; the judgment stays with the human.
What ChatGPT for Financial Services actually does
OpenAI’s product bundles premium financial datasets — Daloopa (earnings transcripts, financial statements), PitchBook (private companies, deals), LSEG News and Crunchbase — indexed on OpenAI infrastructure, so an analyst can ask GPT-6 Astra for comps or a model and trace every figure back to the source table with granular citations. For firms with existing subscriptions, OpenAI is building shared sign-in and entitlement integrations with S&P Capital IQ, LSEG, MSCI, Dow Jones Factiva and Moody’s, and its connector catalog covers 50+ tools including Datasite, Box, Preqin, FactSet and Intapp. Design partners were Morgan Stanley and Evercore; the initial focus is investment banking and equity research. Full breakdown: ChatGPT for Financial Services explained.
Five questions that decide it
1. Who is the user? Client-facing advisor or planning associate → Claude. Analyst building a model or pitchbook → ChatGPT.
2. Where does the data live? If the value is in your custodian, CRM and planning tools, Claude’s connector list is the one that matters — especially on Schwab. If the value is in third-party market data you would otherwise license separately, OpenAI hosting Daloopa/PitchBook/LSEG inside the product is the differentiator.
3. What does compliance need? Advisor-side rules (Marketing Rule, suitability documentation, recordkeeping) map to Claude’s skills and Enterprise audit logs. Bank-side rules (MNPI, information barriers between deal teams and research) map to OpenAI’s multi-workspace design and Compliance Platform exports.
4. What is the budget model? Claude is per-seat plus usage with a stated ballpark ($70–$120/user/month typical). OpenAI’s price is negotiated and undisclosed. Neither is cheap enough to roll out without a usage forecast; both vendors say heavy users pay more.
5. Which vendor has passed your security review? In practice this decides more deployments than features do. Both are enterprise-grade, but the one already approved ships first.
Where both fall short (September 2026)
- No performance data. Neither vendor has published accuracy or time-saved numbers from the design partners.
- US-centric. Custodian and data partners are US firms; MiFID II-specific workflows are not part of either launch.
- Model lock-in. Each product runs only its maker’s models. Firms that want model choice still need a platform such as a general agent framework plus their own connectors.
- Human review remains mandatory. Both products position output as drafts for advisor or analyst approval; neither claims regulated-advice status.
