Quick Answer

Databricks Genie vs ChatGPT Enterprise for Data Analysis

Published:

The short answer

Choose by where your governed data and your users already are. As of November 1, 2026:

  • Databricks Genie wins when your data is in Databricks and Unity Catalog, your data team wants to own the metric definitions, and you want the cheapest path: user interactions with Genie One and Genie Agents are free through January 31, 2027, and you pay only for the SQL compute the questions trigger.
  • ChatGPT Enterprise with the Data agent wins when your data sits in several warehouses, your employees already live in ChatGPT, and you want one assistant that also drafts the email, the slide or the Slack summary that follows the analysis.
  • Both is a reasonable answer: OpenAI’s Data agent reads definitions from Databricks Genie Ontology, so the semantic work your data team does in Genie is reused, not duplicated.

Where Databricks Genie wins

Accuracy comes from curation, and Genie is built around it. Genie Agents (the product formerly called Genie spaces) are domain-specific environments where the data team picks the datasets, writes sample queries and instructions, and adds metrics, business rules and verified answers. Genie One then answers business users’ questions grounded in those definitions, and everything stays inside Unity Catalog governance. If your analysts already work in Databricks, there is nothing new to procure.

It is the cheaper pilot. Databricks states that Genie One and Genie Agents usage by users is free through January 31, 2027; only service principals are billed. The free 150-DBU monthly allowance for Genie LLM usage covers the model, not the SQL warehouse or serverless compute that runs the generated queries, so budget for compute — on a busy Genie Agent that is the bigger line.

Where ChatGPT Enterprise wins

It spans warehouses. OpenAI’s Data agent connects to Redshift, BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, MongoDB and Snowflake in one conversation, and pulls in documents from Drive and SharePoint. A question such as “why did renewals drop in EMEA?” that needs CRM exports, a Snowflake revenue table and a pricing memo is a natural fit.

It continues past the chart. The agent investigates what changed, builds a dashboard your team can edit and refresh, and can recommend next steps, share findings in Slack or email, and carry out approved actions through connected tools. Administrators choose which data connections exist and which roles can use them in Workspace settings > Plugins.

The trade-off is cost visibility. Enterprise is sold by quote, and the analysis runs on your warehouses, so you pay twice: the seat and the compute. For mid-size teams the self-serve ChatGPT Business plan is $20 per Standard seat per month annually ($25 monthly) or $100 per Premium seat ($125 monthly).

How to choose

  1. Count your warehouses. One Databricks lakehouse → Genie. Two or more platforms → ChatGPT’s Data agent, or a warehouse-neutral tool from our best text-to-SQL tools guide.
  2. Decide who owns definitions. Either way, accuracy depends on a semantic layer. Put metrics in Genie Agents, dbt or Snowflake Horizon first; both tools read them.
  3. Check who asks the questions. Analysts inside Databricks → Genie. Sales, finance and operations staff who never open a notebook → ChatGPT, where they already work.
  4. Pilot Genie now if you are on Databricks. The free user window ends January 31, 2027 — enough time to measure accuracy on your own questions before paying anything for the AI layer.
