Quick Answer

Reddit Kills RSS and Public API: What Developers Should Do

Published:

The short answer

Reddit announced on September 30, 2026 that it will stop serving RSS feeds on November 13, 2026 and end public Data API access by March 2027, moving all programmatic access to its paid Developer Platform. Approved apps must register by January 12, 2027. Moderators get Devvit alternatives (Discord Relay); everyone else using RSS gets “no replacement.” If you run anything that reads Reddit — a feed reader, a newsletter, a research pipeline, a social-listening tool, or an AI agent — you have six weeks for RSS and five months for the API. Facts verified October 1, 2026.

The deadlines

DateWhat changesWho is hit
November 13, 2026RSS feeds stop (/.rss and /.json-style feed endpoints)Feed-reader users, newsletter tools, mod alert workflows
January 12, 2027Unregistered third-party apps and bots lose API accessEvery bot, script and app on the current Data API
”Next few months”Old Reddit restricted to logged-in mods and users active in the last 6 months (changed from 90 days at announcement)HTML scrapers, RSS bridges, lightweight clients
March 2027Public Data API shut down; access only via the paid Developer PlatformSocial listening, research, AI assistants, archival tools

Reddit’s wording on RSS: “Because RSS is now a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse, we’ll stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, 2026 while preserving moderation workflows that depend on it through supported alternatives.”

What Reddit offers instead

  • Moderators: the Discord Relay Devvit app for alerts, plus other Devvit apps that run inside Reddit’s platform. Reddit’s advice is to migrate mod workflows before November 13.
  • Developers: the Developer Platform (Devvit), which Reddit says will be the sole route to Reddit data and will be paid. Tier pricing has not been published as of October 1, 2026. Register existing apps before January 12, 2027.
  • AI companies: commercial licensing. Reddit already licenses to Google and OpenAI; after March 2027 an assistant that answers from Reddit threads needs a deal.
  • Readers using RSS for anything outside a community they moderate: nothing. Reddit’s own words.

Migration plan by use case

1. You follow subreddits in a feed reader. Export your Reddit feed URLs now. Options after November 13: Reddit’s own notifications and email digests; third-party readers that use the official API (which then face the March 2027 cutoff themselves); or community-run mirrors, which will be targets for Reddit’s scraping lawsuits. Expect this use case to die.

2. You run a bot or script on the Data API (PRAW, snoowrap, raw OAuth). Register the app by January 12, 2027. Port the logic to a Devvit app, which runs on Reddit’s infrastructure with Reddit’s rate limits and review. Devvit apps can be installed by moderators into their subreddits; they cannot freely crawl the site. Budget for paid access once pricing lands.

3. You do research or social listening across many subreddits. This is the use case Reddit is explicitly closing. Options: a Developer Platform contract once terms exist; a data-licensing deal; or switching to licensed resellers. Archive what you need before March 2027 — and note that Pushshift-style archives have been dead since the 2023 API change.

4. You build AI agents that read Reddit. Public-API reads end in March 2027 and HTML fallbacks will break with the Old Reddit lockdown. Either license the data, or drop Reddit as a live source and rely on what frontier models already learned under their own licences. This also hits content pipelines that mine Reddit for topic signals — the mining step needs a new source (Hacker News and GitHub remain open).

5. You moderate a subreddit with RSS alerts. Install Discord Relay or an equivalent Devvit app now and test it before November 13. Reddit says moderation workflows are the one thing it will preserve.

Why now

Reddit’s Q2 2026 “other revenue” — chiefly AI licensing — was about $43 million, up 24% year over year, and Reddit is among the most-cited sources in AI answers. But a PromptWatch report in September 2026 showed Reddit citations in ChatGPT dropping sharply, which makes paid licences more important, not less. Free RSS and API endpoints undercut every licence Reddit sells. The 2023 API price hike (which killed Apollo and most third-party apps), the 2024 Public Content Policy and the 2025 scraper lawsuits were all steps toward the same end; this is the last one. The same week, Reddit had already restricted Old Reddit and expanded its AI-slop crackdown — see what marketers need to know.

What to do this week

  1. Inventory every Reddit URL, feed and API key in your stack.
  2. Register apps at developers.reddit.com before January 12, 2027.
  3. Replace mod RSS alerts with Discord Relay before November 13, 2026.
  4. Archive research data before March 2027.
  5. Decide whether Reddit data is worth a paid tier — or cut it.
