Gemini Code Assist Alternatives After the 2026 End of Sale
The short answer
Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise went off sale on October 9, 2026, and Google is moving coding assistance into Antigravity, which ships inside Gemini Enterprise. You have time: existing contracts run to their end date, annual subscriptions can renew until January 31, 2027 and monthly ones until December 31, 2027. Your choice is whether to follow Google or switch:
| Tool | Seat price (Oct 13, 2026) | Where it runs | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Antigravity (in Gemini Enterprise) | Included in Gemini Enterprise Standard / Plus | Antigravity IDE, CLI, VS Code and JetBrains extensions | You already buy Gemini Enterprise or run on Google Cloud |
| GitHub Copilot Business / Enterprise | $19 / $39 per seat per month (1,900 / 3,900 AI credits per user) | VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Eclipse, Xcode, CLI, github.com | Your code and reviews live on GitHub |
| Cursor (X Subscription) | Premium $30, Super $100, Ultra $200 per seat | Cursor editor, cloud agents | You want the strongest agentic editor and a Grok usage pool |
| Claude Code | Claude Pro $20/month ($17 billed annually); Max from $100 | Terminal, IDE extensions | Developers prefer a terminal agent on Claude models |
What Google actually changed
Google’s sunset notice for Code Assist Standard and Enterprise sets four dates:
- October 9, 2026 — no new subscriptions.
- January 31, 2027 — last day to add licences and last auto-renewal for annual plans.
- December 31, 2027 — last auto-renewal for monthly plans.
- Contract end — support continues until then.
The replacement, per Google, is Antigravity, “included in Gemini Enterprise editions.” Antigravity’s enterprise announcement adds the details admins care about: Standard and Plus licences include it, developers sign in through Workforce Identity Federation, admins can restrict browser and MCP server permissions and sandbox the workspace, budgets are capped per project, team or person in Cloud Billing, overages are opt-in with hard caps, one toggle turns on full audit logging, and code is not used to train base models. Google does not post an Antigravity-specific seat price; Gemini Enterprise is sold per seat.
Picks by situation
You are a Google Cloud or Workspace shop: move to Antigravity. It is the path of least procurement, keeps your identity and billing in one place, and the VS Code and JetBrains extensions mean developers do not have to change editors. Plan the move before your final renewal date, not after it.
Your code is on GitHub: Copilot Business. At $19 per seat it includes 1,900 GitHub AI Credits per user per month, pooled across the organisation with admin spend controls. It covers chat, agent mode in the major IDEs, pull-request review, the Copilot cloud agent, and Copilot CLI, and can hand tasks to Claude and OpenAI Codex agents (in preview). Enterprise at $39 doubles the credit pool.
Developers want an agentic editor: Cursor. Since October 12, 2026 Cursor is sold as part of xAI’s X Subscription. Team seats come at the individual prices — Premium $30, Super $100, Ultra $200 — with SSO, admin controls and SOC 2. Grok models draw on an included pool; Claude, GPT and other third-party models are available on Premium and above, billed at API list price. See what The X Subscription changes.
Developers live in the terminal: Claude Code. Included from Claude Pro ($20 a month, $17 billed annually); Max plans start at $100 and add monthly API credits. Compare it with other terminal agents in our Claude Code vs Aider vs Cline vs OpenCode page.
A migration checklist
- Inventory seats and renewal dates in the Google admin console; the annual auto-renew cut-off (January 31, 2027) is the real deadline for most teams.
- Export custom settings — code customisation repositories, rules files, MCP configs — before you switch tools.
- Pilot two tools for two weeks on the same backlog and measure merged pull requests, not suggestions accepted.
- Set spend caps on day one. Copilot, Cursor and Antigravity all bill heavy agent use by credits or tokens; caps prevent a surprise first invoice.
