Gemini Free vs AI Plus vs AI Pro vs Ultra (Oct 2026)
The short answer
From October 9, 2026, the free Gemini app is a Flash-Lite-only product, AI Plus ($4.99) drops to Flash-Lite + Flash, and AI Pro ($19.99) becomes the cheapest tier with both Gemini 3.1 Pro and Deep Think. AI Ultra ($99.99 / $199.99) is unchanged and is where Gemini 4 Argon lands first. If you were using free Gemini for coding or long reasoning, the decision is now simple: pay $19.99 or move to a different assistant. Facts verified October 4, 2026 against Google’s updated support document and 9to5Google’s October 3 report.
Model access by plan (effective October 9, 2026)
| Plan | Price | 3.5 Flash-Lite | 3.6 Flash | 3.1 Pro | Deep Think | Usage limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| No plan | Free | ✅ | ❌ (was ✅) | ❌ (was ✅) | ❌ | Base |
| AI Plus | $4.99/mo | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ (was ✅) | ❌ | 2× free |
| AI Pro | $19.99/mo | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ new | 4× free |
| AI Ultra 5x | $99.99/mo | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | 5× Pro |
| AI Ultra 20x | $199.99/mo | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | 20× Pro |
The change is a model-access cut layered on top of the compute-based usage limits Google introduced in May 2026. Before October 9, a free user could pick Flash or Pro and simply ran out of quota faster; after October 9, those models are not in the picker at all.
What each tier is actually for
Free. Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is Google’s cheapest consumer model, tuned for quick questions, short summaries and conversational back-and-forth. It is fine as a search replacement and a draft helper. It is not the model you want for multi-file coding, long document analysis or anything where reasoning depth matters, and Google’s own support page says as much. The free tier keeps 15 GB of storage, a small Deep Research allowance and a few Veo Fast clips per day.
AI Plus ($4.99). Think of it as a Google One storage plan (400 GB) with Flash on top. You get 2× the free usage limits, Flash for better everyday answers, video generation and Daily Brief. Losing Pro is the real downgrade here — before this change, AI Plus was the cheapest way to touch Gemini 3.1 Pro at all. Google cut AI Plus from $7.99 to $4.99 in June 2026, and the Pro removal is effectively the other half of that price cut.
AI Pro ($19.99). This is now the floor for serious use: Gemini 3.1 Pro, Deep Research, Gemini in Gmail/Docs/Sheets, 5 TB of storage, 1,000 monthly Flow credits, and from October Deep Think — the parallel-reasoning mode that until now cost at least $99.99. On a per-dollar basis AI Pro got strictly better in this update, which is the point: Google is pushing the Pro model behind the $19.99 wall where ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro already sit.
AI Ultra ($99.99 / $199.99). Split into 5x and 20x tiers at Google I/O 2026. Both keep every model and Deep Think, plus Gemini Agent, Project Genie, 20 TB storage, YouTube Premium and the largest Veo 3.1 / Antigravity / Jules / AI Studio quotas. Ultra also gets Gemini 4 Argon first; Google has not said whether Argon will count as a “Pro” model for AI Pro subscribers or sit in a new tier above it.
The effort levels nobody is talking about
Alongside the access cut, the Gemini app is adding low, medium and high effort levels for each available model in October 2026, replacing the single “Extended thinking: Complex problem solving” toggle. This mirrors what AI Studio and Antigravity already expose. Higher effort means more thorough answers and more of your limit consumed per prompt — so a $19.99 subscriber running Pro at high effort will hit the 4× cap much faster than one running Flash at low. Treat effort as a budget dial, not a quality dial you leave at maximum.
Should you pay?
- You use Gemini for quick lookups and email drafts: stay free. Flash-Lite is enough and the storage bump from AI Plus is the only reason to pay $4.99.
- You used free Pro for coding or research: AI Pro at $19.99 is the direct replacement and now includes Deep Think. The alternatives at the same price are ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro.
- You are on AI Plus for Pro access: either upgrade to AI Pro before your account’s cutoff email lands, or accept Flash as your ceiling.
- You want Gemini 4 Argon now: only AI Ultra. See what Gemini 4 Argon is and the $100 vs $200 Ultra comparison.
