Quick Answer

Best Private AI Meeting Note Takers 2026: Local vs Cloud

Published:

The short answer

If the transcript must never leave your machine, use Anarlog (team-ready, open source) or Google AI Edge Foresight (free Google showcase on Apple-silicon Macs). If you want the best cloud experience without a bot in the call, use Granola. If you need a bot that records for everyone and pushes into a CRM, use Fireflies or Otter. Prices and features as of October 17, 2026.

Notes on each

Anarlog. The meeting notetaker formerly sold as Hyprnote and then Char was renamed Anarlog and relicensed from GPL to MIT; the Char name now belongs to a separate AI to-do product. It stores meetings in local SQLite with Markdown export, supports 45+ languages, works with Zoom, Meet, Teams, phone and in-person, and lets you plug in local models or your own keys. The team says it still ships maintenance and product updates, but its daily focus is the new Char — weigh that for long-term support.

Google AI Edge Foresight. Announced alongside EmbeddingGemma 2 on October 6, 2026. It enhances shorthand notes from the live transcript, detects questions mid-meeting and answers them from your imported documents, and searches across transcripts, notes, images and files in one vector space. Google calls it experimental and a developer showcase; it is Mac-only (a GitHub issue requesting Windows support is open), so treat it as a strong free personal tool, not a company standard.

Granola. The bot-free cloud option. Business adds unlimited history, advanced models, integrations (Notion, HubSpot, Zapier, Slack), MCP access for Claude and ChatGPT and an API. Audio is deleted after transcription, it is SOC 2 Type II certified, and Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM, workspace-wide retention policy and HIPAA-compliant workspaces.

Fireflies and Otter. Best when you want every meeting recorded for the whole team and synced to a CRM, and the visible bot is acceptable. Fireflies leans into sales (conversation intelligence on Business); Otter is the cheapest paid cloud tier and adds an MCP server.

How to choose

  • Legal, medical or confidential client calls, no cloud allowed: Anarlog with a local model.
  • Personal use on an M-series Mac, want search over your files too: Google AI Edge Foresight.
  • Team wants great notes without a bot and accepts a cloud vendor: Granola Business; Enterprise if you need SSO or HIPAA.
  • Sales team, CRM sync, recordings for everyone: Fireflies Business.
  • Lowest-cost cloud transcripts: Otter Pro.

Whatever you pick, check consent law where you record: several US states require every party’s consent, and a bot-free tool does not remove that duty.
